St. Paul Saints News Release
WICHITA, KS - Wichita Wingnuts starter Nick Singleton missed when he tried to hit Saints DH Gerard Haran, but it was the Saints who swung and missed most of the night striking out 13 times and lost 9-3 on Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium ending their three game win streak
In the second inning Singleton threw two pitches at Haran missing both times, but was ejected from the game. Haran took a few steps towards the mound and jawed with Singleton as the benches cleared, but no punches were thrown.
After that the Saints took the early lead in the third when Brandon Carter reached on a bunt single, moved to second on a walk to Josh Alley and scored on a single from Ole Sheldon giving the Saints a 1-0 lead. Alley finished the night 3-3 with two doubles, a run and two walks.
The Wingnuts took a 2-1 lead in the fourth courtesy of Mario Delgado. Jackson Melian reached when Flint Wipke dropped a pop up allowing Melian to reach. The next pitch to Delgado was deposited over the right field wall, his seventh of the season.
The Saints answered right back with the Carter-Sheldon connection. In the fifth Carter singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and went to third on an Alley singled. With one out Sheldon singled home Carter tying the game at two. Sheldon finished the night 2-5 with two RBI. Carter was 2-4 with two runs scored.
The Wingnuts took the lead in the fifth and never looked back. Jake Bradshaw led off with a single and went to third on a double by Josh Horn. With one out Jorge Cortes hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. Melian walked and back-to-back RBI singles by Delgado and Jeff Christy made it 5-2.
The same two teams meet on Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in game three of the four game series. The Saints send Bethany Lutheran Univesity LHP Ashton Dorris, who will make his professional debut, to the mound against Wingnuts RHP Adam Cowart (2-5, 4.01). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
