San Angelo Saints News Release

Coming Up This Week – The Saints continue their long January slate of road games at Bossier-Shreveport on Thursday night and at Corpus Christi on Friday night.

Week In Review – The Saints went 0-1-1 this week with a road loss to Lubbock on Friday night and an overtime road loss to Amarillo on Saturday.

Saints in the City – The Saints players continue to participate in Awards Ceremonies for all the San Angelo elementary schools' Accelerated Reader Programs. The team is also trying to gear up our Grades for Blades program in the elementary schools for the February report cards.

January 10th / San Angelo 1 - Lubbock 5 / The Cotton Kings jumped out to a 2-0 1st period lead on a power-play goal and a penalty shot. But, the Saints got one back at the 13:20 mark when Trevor Weisgerber beat Lubbock's Mike Brusseau after his line cycled the Kings into leaving him open in the slot. After a scoreless 2nd period a couple of Saints mistakes led to 2 goals in the first 5:39 of the 3rd period – and then Barry McKinlay's rocket power-play goal put the game out of reach at the 11:07 mark. The game ended ugly with Ryan Reid fighting Lubbock's David Ambler and then pummeling Mike Hiebert in the final seconds – which almost led to another tilt between the respective head coaches.

January 11th / San Angelo 4 - Amarillo 5 (OT) / After giving up a soft goal just 1:03 into the game the Saints settled down and took a 2-1 1st period lead on goals by Jan Jas and Steve Roberts. 2nd period goals by Matt Frick and Troy Mann put the Saints up 4-2, but the Gorillas scored a controversial goal with less than a minute left in the period to make it 4-3 heading into the 3rd. On the Gorillas 3rd goal Saints goaltender Scott Reid was clearly interfered with – but the referee refused to make the call. The Saints held the lead until the 16:38 mark of the 3rd period when John Dean deflected a centering pass just enough to get it by Reid to tie the game at 4-4. Then, with just 17 seconds left in overtime, a defensive mistake by the Saints let Gorillas All-Star Henry Kuster walk into the slot and fire a wrister past Reid for the game-winner as the Saints once again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

Saint of the Month – Trevor Weisgerber was named the Saints Player of the Month for December after scoring 7 goals and 5 assists in 12 games with a +3 rating. He was also the CHL Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 9-15.

Injury Report – Jamie Thompson has been placed on the season ending injured reserve. Jason Abel is on the 45-day injured reserve with a hernia. Corri Moffat is expected back soon, possibly this weekend. Kori Davison missed Saturday's game against Amarillo and his return date is still unknown at this time. Moffat's return would be a big boost to the Saints who have been playing with just 4 d-men the past couple of weeks.
