Scorpions Take Three of Four Points on the Road

SCORPIONS ON THE RADIO – The Scorpions are teaming up this season with SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal to bring you all of the Scorpions action on the radio. Mike Sheehan is in his first season as the Voice of the Scorpions. Wednesday's and Friday's games are scheduled to air on SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal while Saturday's game will air on 1050 AM KTBL.

SCORPIONS HOCKEY TALK ON TUESDAY THIS WEEK – With the Scorpions in action on the ice Wednesday, the Scorpions' weekly radio talk show moves THIS WEEK ONLY to Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. on SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal, live on location at the Corner Pocket, 9603 Lomas NE just west of Eubank. Scorpions Hockey Talk features new Scorpions coach Bill McDonald and the "Voice of the Scorpions" Mike Sheehan, along with special guests each week. Next week the show shifts back to Wednesday night, Jan. 22.

BIG WEEK AHEAD AT TINGLEY –The Scorpions return to Tingley Coliseum this Wednesday when the face the Corpus Christi Rayz for the only time this season. Faceoff is 7:05 p.m. The Scorpions will be debuting their third "gold" jerseys for the first time this season in that game, dubbed "Frank Bowl I" as WD Sports owns the Scorpions and last month assumed ownership of the Rayz. Friday night the Scorpions host Oklahoma City for the only time this year on 100.3 The Peak Family Night. Get 4 Center Ice tickets, 4 sodas and 4 hot dogs all for $44. Saturday, Jan. 18 against Odessa is KRQE Crimestoppers Rally Towel Night, with FREE rally towels going to the first 1,500 fans.

SCORPIONS RECAP

SCORPIONS 3, AMARILLO 1 – The Scorpions scored one goal in each period and Scott Myers stopped 39 of 40 shots as the Scorpions stopped Amarillo's eight-game home winning streak with a 3-1 win on Friday. Tyler Baines tallied a power play goal in the opening period, Peter Ambroziak scored in the second period and Chris Richards found the net in the third. Baines had a goal and an assist while Pete Brearley chipped in two helpers. Myers held the Gorillas off the board until less than three minutes remained in the game.

LUBBOCK 5, SCORPIONS 4 (SO) – Pete Brearley had a goal and two assists but Lubbock came away with a 5-4 shootout win on Saturday. Fred Mattersdorfer forced overtime by scoring on the power play with 6:46 left in the third period Jeff Cameron, Brearley and Tyler Baines all scored during the second period as the Scorpions traded the lead back and forth with the Cotton Kings. Baines had a goal and assist for the second straight game. Scott Myers stopped 39 shots in his third straight start.

SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS –

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Scorpions and Rayz meet for the only time this season on Wednesday at Tingley Coliseum. The two teams have a lot in common – both are tied in the standings with 35 points but the Rayz play at Amarillo tomorrow night, both are now owned by WD Sports and Doug Frank, former Scorpions general manager and coach Pat Dunn is now the Rayz' GM, and Corpus Christi has three former Scorpions in Martin Beck, Shaun Fairweather and David Bourque. Layne Roland leads the Rayz with 35 points but is out for the season with a shoulder injury. John Sicinski (17g-17a-34pts) and Cosmo DuPaul (11g-22a-33pts) are right behind. Brent Belecki is the top goaltender, posting a 15-14-1 record and 2.90 GAA.

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Blazers roll into Albuquerque for the only time this season on Friday. The Scorpions are 4-0 all-time against Oklahoma City, including a 3-2 road win this season on Dec. 6. All four games between the teams have been decided by one goal. Coach Doug Sauter's team has moved into first place in the Northwest Division after winning three in a row and five of the last six games. Longtime Blazer Joe Burton leads the Blazers and is second in CHL with 29 goals and 54 points. Defenseman Hardy Sauter is the league's top scoring blueliner with 49 points (6g-43a) and also leads everybody with 43 assists. Goalie Boyd Ballard is 17-8-1 on the season with a 2.65 GAA.

ODESSA – Will the score be 3-2 for the sixth straight time this season? The first five meetings have been decided by that score, with four of the games being ended in overtime. The Scorpions won the first two, but the Jackalopes have won the last three. However, the Jackalopes have struggled to five straight losses during their season-long nine-game road trip, which ends Saturday here in Albuquerque. Mike Rutter leads Odessa with 39 points (13g-26a), followed by All-Star defenseman Scott Hillman with 34 points (10g-24a). Goalie Mike Gorman is 15-9-4 with a 2.60 GAA.

MAKING MOVES AGAIN – The Scorpions debuted four new players in the lineup this weekend. Rookie defenseman Jeff Cameron, acquired from Fort Worth for future considerations, picked up an assist on Friday and scored his first goal in a Scorpions uniform on Saturday at Lubbock. Forward Ben Gorewich and defensemen Kris Currie and Jeff Alcombrack, all acquired from Memphis earlier in the week, made their Scorpions debuts as well. Gorewich and Currie picked up assists on Saturday at Lubbock.

KUPAKS AN ALL-STAR – Defenseman Arturs Kupaks was selected last week to the CHL All-Star Game on Jan. 23 in Oklahoma City. Kupaks leads Scorpions defensemen and is sixth in the league with 31 points (8g-23a). This will be the 29 year-old Latvian's fourth All-Star appearance overall, with his last coming in 2000 in Amarillo while he was with Lubbock.

STINGERS – With nine points (3g-6a) in his last five games, Pete Brearley has moved into the top 20 in the CHL in scoring with 40 points (19g-21a)... Chris Richards remains in the top ten with 48 points (22g-26a)... He has eight points (6g-2a) in five games against Odessa... Peter Ambroziak is tied for third in the league with five game-winning goals... Jeff Cameron scored in his second Scorpions game after scoring in his first game with Fort Worth.
