Saints Week in Review

November 18, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release

Coming Up This Week – The Saints continue their torrid early-season schedule with three more games this week. Austin comes to town Tuesday night followed by home games against Odessa on Friday and Laredo on Saturday. All game times are at 7:05 p.m.

Weekend Promotions – Friday night against Odessa is "Penny Saver Night" at the San Angelo Coliseum. Hot dogs, popcorn, sodas and 12 oz beers will all be just 1-cent from 6-7 p.m. at the coliseum concession stands. Saturday night is "Youth Sports Autograph Night." A color Saints team picture will be in every edition of the San Angelo Standard Times newspaper that day and will also be handed out to fans at the game for a Team Autograph Party following the game.

Week In Review – The Saints went 0-4-0 this week with home losses to Odessa and New Mexico sandwiched around road losses to Austin and Laredo.

November 12 / Odessa 3 - San Angelo 2 / After a scoreless 1st period the Jacks took a 1-0 lead as Kevin Hansen scored the lone 2nd period goal. Matt Cressman scored short-handed to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead, but the Saints cut that to 2-1 on Kori Davison's power-play goal less than a minute later. Another short-handed tally by Mike Rutter put the Jacks up 3-1 until late in the game when Chris Peach scored with just over a minute to play. But, the Saints could not muster any last-second magic and the Jacks took the 3-2 victory.

November 15 / Austin 4 - San Angelo 0 / The Ice Bats outshot the undermanned Saints 38-22 and scored in each period to hand the Saints their first shut-out loss of the season. Already skating with only 14 position players, the Saints lost forwards Jamie Thompson and Jeff Cheeseman to injury during the game. Shawn Legault notched two goals for the Ice Bats including the game winner.

November 16 / Laredo 7 - San Angelo 3 / Playing with only 12 skaters, the Saints were able to keep the game close until the 3rd period when Laredo put in 3 goals, including one with only 12 second remaining to make the final score a lot worse than the game really was. However, the Bucks did pepper Saints goaltender Jamie Ronayne with a whopping 62 shots. Chris Grenville recorded a hat-trick to lead the Bucks to the win.

November 17 / New Mexico 7 - San Angelo 4 / The Saints fell behind 5-0 before mounting a charge with 3 unanswered goals in the 2nd period. But, the Scorpions were too much for the leg-weary and undermanned Saints who again only suited up 12 skaters. Numerous defensive breakdowns by the Saints led to several goals for the Scorpions including two short-handed tallies by Craig Stahl and an unassisted goal off a steal by Nate Mauer. Troy Mann led the charge for the Saints with 2 goals and 1 assist, but the bigger Scorpions wore the Saints down with their early barrage and the Saints never recovered.

Injury Report – The Saints continue to be wracked by injuries. Forwards Jamie Thompson, Jason Abel, Blake Sheane, Cory Pecush and Jeff Cheeseman have all missed significant time and remain out of the line-up. Several roster moves/additions may be in the works this week to try to take up the slack.
