SCORPIONS RECAP -
SCORPIONS 6, EL PASO 3 - The Scorpions broke out to a 4-0 lead after two periods and held on for a 6-3 win over the Buzzards. Tyler Baines posted a career-high five points with a goal and four assists, while Pete Brearley and Peter Ambroziak each scored twice for the Scorpions. Chris Richards added a goal and two assists. Luciano Caravaggio made 30 saves for the win in goal.
ODESSA 3, SCORPIONS 2 (OT) - Goals from Tyler Baines and Chris Richards erased a 2-0 deficit in the third period, but Odessa scored in overtime to take a 3-2 win. All three meetings between the teams this season have been 3-2 overtime decisions, with the Scorpions taking the first two games. Scott Myers stopped 24 shots in goal, including a breakaway with 40 seconds left in regulation.
SCORPIONS 7, SAN ANGELO 4 - The Scorpions opened a 5-0 advantage in the second period before holding off the pesky Saints for a 7-4 win to extend their unbeaten streak to three games. Pete Brearley, Nate Mauer and Craig Stahl all scored twice for the Scorps. Both of Stahl's tallies came shorthanded, and he added an assist. Tyler Baines chipped in a goal and two assists in the victory. Luciano Caravaggio turned aside 38 shots.
SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS -
TULSA - It's hard to believe, but the Scorpions and Oilers conclude their season series after a pair of meetings this week, tomorrow in Tulsa and Saturday at Tingley Coliseum. The Oilers are off to an amazing start with a 12-1-0 record, including a 3-2 win over New Mexico at Tingley on Nov. 10. The two main antagonists for Tulsa in that game, Todd Marcellus and Jamie Steer, currently lead the Oilers in scoring. Marcellus leads the Oilers and is tied for the third in the CHL with 21 points (10g-11a) while Steer is also in the top ten with 17 points (8g-9a). Goalie Rod Branch leads the way with 12 wins(12-0), is tied for first with four shutouts and is second with 1.56 GAA. The Oilers are first in the league on the penalty kill at 93.2%.
EL PASO - The Scorpions dropped the Buzzards 6-3 in El Paso on Friday to even the season series at a game apiece. El Paso has dropped their last five games, including all three this weekend, after previously going unbeaten in five in a row. Russ Guzior, who posted a hat trick against the Scorps on Friday in a losing effort, leads the Buzzards with 16 points (8g-8a). Jeff Scharf is next with 14 points (8g-6a). Goalie Matt Carmichael has respectable numbers (2.83 GAA, .911 save percentage) despite his 4-7-1 record.
OR SO WE THOUGHT - We left El Paso on Friday thinking Peter Ambroziak had recorded the first hat trick of the season for the Scorpions. It was revealed that Chris Richards should have received credit for Ambroziak's second goal, leaving Ambroziak with two goals on the night while Richards posted a goal and two assists.
BAINES A-BLAZING - Tyler Baines found his scoring touch over the weekend. Baines nearly tripled his point total on the season with nine points (3g-6a) in the three games. Baines posted a career-high five points with a goal and four assists in Friday's win at El Paso. He scored a goal during the Scorps ' third period comeback at Odessa on Saturday and added a goal and two assists at San Angelo last night. He is now second on the team with 14 points (4g-10a) in 14 games.
STINGERS - Nate Mauer recorded his first two goals of the season in Sunday's win at San Angelo. Craig Stahl scored a pair of shorthanded goals on Sunday, and yes, he did with his normal right-handed stick. He is tied for fourth in the CHL with those two shorthanded tallies. Pete Brearley leads the Scorpions with three game-winning goals, adding another GW on Friday at El Paso. Sunday's seven-goal outburst was a season-high. Chris Richards continues to produce. The Scorpions' leading scorer notched six points (2g-4a) in three games. The Scorpions are now 3-2-1 in their last six games. After concluding this road trip tomorrow night, the Scorpions will play nine of the next ten games and ten of their next 13 at Tingley Coliseum, including a season-long five-game homestand beginning Friday and lasting until Nov. 30.
