Baines, Brusseau Honored by CHL
Published on November 18, 2002 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Left wing Tyler Baines of the New Mexico Scorpions and Lubbock Cotton Kings netminder Mike Brusseau have respectively been named the Central Hockey League's Player and Goaltender of the Week for Week 5 of the CHL season.
Lethbridge, Alberta native Baines enjoyed a fine offensive week for the Scorpions, scoring in all three New Mexico road contests last week, beginning with a five-point (one goal, four assists) outing in a 6-3 win at El Paso November 15th. The following night, he added a single goal in a 3-2 overtime loss in Odessa, then managed a goal and two assists Sunday in a 7-4 win at San Angelo. Baines, a CHL All-Star and a finalist for Rookie of the Year honors last season, is in his second year with the Scorpions. His nine-point week moves him into second in team scoring with 14 points.
Lubbock goaltender Mike Brusseau has also enjoyed a tremendous start to the 2002-2003 CHL season, and has been named CHL Goaltender of the Week following back-to-back wins over the El Paso Buzzards. In three starts this week, the Detroit, Michigan native allowed four total goals against. In El Paso November 16th, he turned aside all 18 Buzzard shots to record his third shutout of the season, then turned aside 29 of 30 shots Sunday to complete a sweep of the home and home series. His 1.96 goals against average ranks third in the CHL, as does his three shutouts, trailing only Austin's Matt Barnes and Tulsa's Rod Branch in both categories.
