Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, IA- Red, white, and blue was a good look for the Dubuque Fighting Saints Friday night. The Fighting Saints honored the men and women of the armed services on Military Appreciation Night, presented by Kwik Stop and Dairy Queen and media partner 101.1 The River, and earned a 6-4 win over the Tri-City Storm in front of a crowd of 2,894 fans. Dubuque wore special patriotic jerseys that were red, white, and blue in color, and featured the stars and stripes.

The Storm battled back all game long, but two third period goals from Andrew Gaus and Jason Ford were too much for the Storm to overcome. With Tri-City tying the game early into the third period, the Fighting Saints used the backing of the crowd to break the deadlock. Dubuque's game-winning goal was a gift from the Storm. Netminder Jacob Johansson mishandled the puck and tried to clear it. He hit Dubuque's Gaus, and the puck skipped into the Tri-City goal to make it 5-4 Fighting Saints with eight minutes left in the game.

Dubuque would add insurance just a few minutes later. Robby Darrar would intercept a pass and feed Jason Ford, who fired it into the open side of the goal to make it 6-4 at the 14:23 mark, and preserve the win for Dubuque.

The game was a back and forth contest all night. In the first period, the Storm looked to take the large crowd out of the game quickly. The visitors scored just 4:53 into the game to gain a lead. Chris Wilkie tapped in a pass on the right wing for the goal thanks to a great setup from Cutler Martin to make it 1-0 Storm.

With the crowd behind them and the colors of their country on their jerseys, the Fighting Saints battled back with vengeance. Dubuque outshot Tri-City 15-7 in the first period and rattled off three straight goals.

In his first home game back since returning from a serious injury, Dylan Chanter celebrated his first USHL goal. Chanter evened the score at the 8:36 mark on a blueline blast with a delayed penalty. With mom and dad in attendance, Chanter got the puck at the right point and blasted a shot that found its way through a large group of players, and past Tri-City goaltender Johansson to make it 1-1. Blake Hillman and Eric Robinson assisted.

Dubuque scored again at the 12:12 mark on a goal from Max McHugh. At the end of a shift, Dubuque darted up ice on a two-on-one when Brett Boeing chipped the puck to McHugh. He slid it five-hole on Johansson to give Dubuque a lead. Robby Darrar would add to the lead with his fourth goal of the season on the powerplay to give Dubuque a 3-1 advanatage heading into the second period.

As period two began, the tides turned. The Storm scored a pair of goals to even the score at two. Tri-City's Martin made a great individual play to make it 3-2 at 2:16. The Storm defenseman gloved down the puck at the left point and dropped it to the ice, quickly wristing a shot over Dubuque goaltender Christian Frey's blocker. Nine minutes later the Storm tied the game on a powerplay goal from Chase Berger. After a save by Frey with the pad on the initial shot, the rebound came in front for Berger who chopped it in to tie the game 3-3.

Dubuque would retake the lead late in the second period. Shane Eiserman scored on a 5-on-3 powerplay at the 14:05 of the middle frame to put Dubuque up 4-3. Dylan Gambrell made a beautiful backhand pass to Eiserman on the right side and he tucked it into the net before Johannson could react.

Tri-City evened the score at the 3:51 mark on a Christian Horn powerplay goal, but it was the Fighting Saints pulling away with the final two goals to earn the win.

Dubuque was 2-for-6 on the powerplay while Tri-City was 2-for-3. The Fighting Saints outshot the Storm 41-24 to improve to 7-0-0 at home.

After the game, the Fighting Saints auctioned off the game worn jerseys with proceeds going to the Veterans Freedom Center. Several jerseys went in excess of $1,000 for a great cause.

The Fighting Saints visit Cedar Rapids tomorrow for a Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup game versus the RoughRiders. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM. Next Friday the Fighting Saints host the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:35 p.m. for Mustache Mania, as we celebrate great facial hair.
