Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- Saturday night has not been kind to the Dubuque Fighting Saints of late. The Fighting Saints dropped their fourth straight Saturday night game, 4-1, to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup play. Dubuque fell to 10-4-1 on the season with all four losses coming on the road on four consecutive Saturdays.
Coming off a four-goal tournament with Team USA at the 2013 World Junior A Challenge in Canada, Karson Kuhlman's hot hand continued for Dubuque Saturday. The second year Fighting Saint scored his third goal of the season to put the Fighting Saints on the board. Alexx Privitera fired a short from the right point that Kuhlman tipped. With netminder Chris Birdsall down on the ice, Kuhlman collected the loose puck and flipped a shot past Birdsall's pad to make it 1-0 Dubuque only 6:26 into the first period.
Cedar Rapids then rattled off a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead. At 8:34, with the RoughRiders on the powerplay, Nick Master dished a pass from behind the goal line to Corey Petrash who was wide-open on the back door. He fired a shot past a helpless Christian Frey to make it 1-1. Two minutes later, Clark Kuster put Cedar Rapids on top. A goalmouth scramble saw the puck lodged free to the low slot. Kuster pushed a backhanded off of Frey's body and into the net to make it 2-1 RoughRiders.
In the second period, Cedar Rapids capitalized with the period's lone goal from Andrew Oglevie. Off a faceoff at center ice, Alex Marsh made a beautiful move around a Dubuque defender and fed Oglevie on the doorstep to put Cedar Rapids up 3-1. Both teams were unable to add to the score on special teams. Dubuque killed off a lengthy 5-on-3, but also failed to score on a pair of late powerplays. The Fighting Saints were limited to just three shots in the second period.
The third period saw the lone goal come off the stick of Cedar Rapids forward Judd Peterson into the empty net late to seal the win. Despite having nearly two minutes of 5-on-3 powerplay time, the Fighting Saints only managed four shots in the third period and were outshot 27-18 on the evening.
Dubuque fell to 1-2-0 in Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup play. Frey made 23 saves in the losing effort.
Next Friday, the Fighting Saints host the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:35 p.m. for Mustache Appreciation Night-It's Facial Hair Friday Night at the Rink. Tickets are on-sale by calling 563.583.6880 or online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
