Ice Twice as Nice
November 16, 2013 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Indiana Ice News Release
Friday night was not the Indiana Ice's night. Trailing the Sioux City Musketeers 3-0 at 1:04 in the third period, a routine dump into the Sioux City defensive zone resulted in a shattered pane of glass behind the Musketeer net.
After an hour delay, the longest of time outs resulted in a 20 hour delay as the game resumed Saturday before the regularly scheduled weekend set with Sioux City. The new day improved drastically as the Ice turned the tables and walked away with a pair of 4-3 victories.
By doubling their pleasure and doubling their fun with a pair of victories, the hosts improved their record to 5-1-1 in their last seven starts.
What a difference a day made. Indy scored four unanswered goals in less than 15 minutes to catch and defeat the USHL's second-best team 4-3 at Pan Am Pavilion in the completion of game one.
Tyler Andrew scored the game winner with 20 seconds remaining to complete the improbable comeback. Andrew collaborated with Tyler Pham to cancel what looked like a probable game one loss into a victory.
The comeback began with a wrap-around goal off the stick of Scott Conway at 5:08 of the third period. Jacob Pritchard got the assist to cut the margin to 3-1.
Conway notched his second of the night at 17:16 to raise the host's hopes. Andrew got the helper after the Ice pulled goaltender Jason Pawloski in lieu of an extra skater.
Denis Smirnov tied it 48 seconds before the final horn as the night's heroes, Conway and Andrew, assisted on the tying goal before Andrew finished the scoring.
The Musketeers held their 3-0 lead at the resumption of the final period on tallies by Austin Adduono, Adam Johnson, and Blake Heinrich despite Indiana holding a 32-10 shots on goal advantage.
"I had a rough day on Friday in goal," said Indiana goaltender Pawloski. "I could feel in the locker room the intensity and the guys in front of me battled back. The last time I won two games in one day was in Pee Wee hockey."
After the unlikely win over the visitors just minutes before, the Indiana Ice returned for the second helping in the unique one-day doubleheader.
The game winning goal came off the stick of Patrick Newell at 15:10 in the third period. Aidan Muir and Pham had helpers on the play that secured the victory and sealed Indy's weekend sweep over the Musketeers.
Indiana opened scoring in the first period of the second match with a goal from Michael Booth at 14:33. Salvaggio and Jake Cass had helpers on the goal and the Ice led 1-0 going into the second period.
Salvaggio added a goal to his earlier assist at 5:14 in the second period with help from Andrew and Newell. Sioux City's Brandon Hawkins and Jake Montgomery also found the net in the second frame, tying things up 2-2 going into the final period.
Just minutes after a third period goal from the Musketeers' Cedric LaCroix, Indiana's Brian Pinho scored at 12:06 during a 5-on-3 power play to give Indiana a 3-2 lead. Dwyer Tschantz and Conway had helpers on the goal. The goal from Newell wrapped things up in Indiana's favor.
"We came together as a team and I think they came out flat-footed in the completion of the first game," Conway commented after finishing the night with four points (2G, 2A).
The wagons head west for Indy as they face off with the Sioux Falls Stampede on Friday and the Omaha Lancers on Saturday before returning to the Circle City for a Thanksgiving Day Eve battle with the Youngstown Phantoms at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Fans with a valid ticket to the game are invited to a post-game concert featuring Radio Disney artists Megan and Liz.
