Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks and Sioux Falls Stampede played a game which will have the chance to go down as the strangest in the United States Hockey League this season, prevailing 4-3 in a shootout at Sioux Falls Arena Friday.
After the initial puck drop was delayed a half hour by a shattered pane of glass in warmups, Sioux Falls turned away four Waterloo power plays in the opening period and pulled ahead to a 2-0 lead by intermission. Michael Buonincontri tipped a Tony Calderone shot for the opening goal of the game at 2:47. Then the Stampede capitalized on a power play at 15:46; the Hawks couldn't take the puck from Griffen Molino, and he set up Zeb Knutson for a quick wrister from the right dot.
Following another delay at intermission when the ice resurfacer ran over some debris, Waterloo battled back in the second, beginning with a rebound tally by Blake Winiecki just 1:24 after the game restarted. Sioux Falls pulled back ahead by two goals briefly, thanks to a power play score by Dennis Kravchenko at 14:35, shooting through traffic from the high slot. However, Alec McCrea fired a shot into the net with seven-tenths of a second remaining before the second intermission.
Patrick Russell finally tied the game with 2:16 left in regulation, sending a shot off the crossbar and into the net to cap a two-on-two rush. Liam Pecararo made the pass to set up the goal.
During the overtime, Cal Petersen saved the day. After fending off a Sioux Falls power play at the beginning of extra time, he made a brilliant left skate save on Molino's wraparound try at the 1:30 mark. Petersen made another stop on a Molino chance later and also turned away a partial breakaway by C.J. Franklin with 2.6 seconds remaining. The Hawks' goalie finished the night with 28 saves.
Peter Krieger scored in the first round of shootout, but everyone's attention was diverted by a stick-swinging incident on the benches before the first Sioux Falls opportunity. Former Hawks defenseman Peter Hand was given a game misconduct for intent to injure after the altercation. Ultimately the shootout went twelve rounds before Hayden Shaw lifted the puck over the glove of David Jacobson, and Petersen turned away Ed McGovern's final try to extend the matchup. Knutson had scored for Sioux Falls in the second round. In the ninth, Drew Melanson and Buonincontri exchanged goals.
The Hawks swoop back home to Young Arena to host the Omaha Lancers Saturday evening. Waterloo will wear special camouflage jerseys presented by Screaming Eagle American Bar and Grill which will be auctioned after the game to benefit local veterans' causes. Good seats still remain for the matchup and can be ordered by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680 or online from waterlooblackhawks.com.
