Saints Tie Dubious Mark in Being Swept by Railroaders, Lose 8-1

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints have never scored fewer runs in a three-game home series in their 27-year history than they did against the Cleburne Railroaders. They were swept for the first time this season, losing 8-1 on Friday night at CHS Field in front of 9,008. The Saints managed just four runs in the three games, tied for the fewest runs scored in a three-game home series in franchise history. The loss drops the Saints to 40-24 on the season.

For the third consecutive game the Railroaders scored in the first inning when leadoff man Daniel Robertson blasted the second pitch of the game over the left field wall, his fifth of the season, making it 1-0 Railroaders.

In the second they added two more solo homers when Zach Nehrir led off the inning with a blast to left-center, his ninth of the season, making it 2-0. With two outs, Hunter Clanin hit his ninth of the season increasing the lead to 3-0.

In the third with one out, Angel Reyes doubled and scored on an RBI single from Chase Simpson giving the Railroaders a 4-0 lead.

The Saints got their lone run in the sixth when Blake Schmit led off with a double, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch getting the Saints to within three.

The Railroaders put up three in the seventh when K.C. Huth led off by reaching on a fielding error from third baseman Chesny Young. A single by Robertson moved Huth to third. With one out, Simpson doubled home a pair making it 6-1 Railroaders. With two outs Zach Nehrir made it 7-1 with an RBI single.

In the ninth the Railroaders scored their final run when Simpson singled to right and Logan Trowbridge tripled him home.

The Saints never led in the three-game series and were tied for a total of one full inning. The four runs they scored in this series matches the lowest total in a three-game home series in franchise history. They scored four runs on July 28-29, 2001 against the Sioux Falls Canaries. The difference in that three-game series is the 28th was a double header, two seven inning games, so it's the first time the Saints have scored as few as four runs in three nine inning games at home. It was also the first time the Saints were swept at home since June 25-27, 2018 vs. Sioux City Explorers.

The Saints welcome in the Kansas City T-Bones for a three-game series on Saturday night at CHS Field at 7:05 p.m. The Saints are TBA and the T-Bones send RHP Jon Perrin (2-1, 4.38) to the mound. It is Second Chance Prom Night. The game can be heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM and seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities area.
