St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints signed a player who should have no problem finding his way to Midway Stadium.

LHP Brian Whinnery, who pitched the championship game when St. Thomas won the 2001 NCAA Division III championship, joined the team in time for their game tonight with Sioux City.

The 26-year old is a graduate of Cretin-Derham Hall High School and also played at St. John's prior to transferring to St. Thomas.

"We've known about this guy for a while now," said St. Paul manager George Tsamis. "We just had to wait for the right moment. He gives us something we needed - a lefthanded arm in the bullpen. I liked what I saw of him during the preseason."

Tsamis was referring to the May 9 game when Whinnery, pitching for a local amateur All-Star team, went four innings against the Saints. He allowed three runs in one inning but just two hits and no runs in the other three, walking nobody and striking out a pair.

In two seasons at St. Thomas, Whinnery went 11-7 with five saves and 184 strikeouts in 148 innings. In 2001, he won five post-season games, including going the distance when the Tommies defeated Montclair State, 8-4, for the school's only NCAA baseball crown.

In high school, he was even more impressive, posting a 22-0 won-loss mark for the Raiders, helping them to the 1997 and 1998 Class AA state titles. In both years, he was the winning pitcher in the state championship game.
