Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Sioux Falls, SD - Jeff Blitstein led the Lincoln Saltdogs (15-9) by throwing a six-hit three-strikeout shutout of the Sioux Falls Canaries (11-11) in the series opener at the Birdcage on Sunday afternoon.
The Saltdogs used the long ball to score a majority of their runs. Pichi Balet went four-for-four with two home runs, a solo shot in the first and a two run bomb in the third. Brett Cooley drove in two for the Dogs with a second inning homer. The three home run blasts put the Canaries ahead 5-0 after three innings.
Lincoln added to their lead with a run in the fifth. Evan Tartaglia doubled and stole third base for his 27th steal of the year. Pichi Balet brought Tartaglia home with a sacrifice fly Balet to make it 6-0.
In the bottom of the sixth the Canaries hit into a triple play. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Anthony Monegan bounced a grounder back to pitcher Jeff Blitstein. Blitstein looked David Hoffman back at third before throwing to second to retire Angelo Fermin. Shortstop Ryan Priddy relayed the throw to first baseman Brett Cooley to retire Monegan, and Cooley threw home to catcher Kevin Sullivan to beat David Hoffman breaking for the plate. The triple play was the first the Canaries have hit into this season.
The Saltdogs got another run in the seventh when Ryan Priddy singled and scored on a error, to put the Saltdogs ahead for the 7-0 final.
Jeff Blitstein (6-1) picked up the win for the Saltdogs, and Tony Cogan (6-3) suffered the loss for the Canaries.
The Canaries will host the Lincoln Saltdogs again Monday night for the second game in their four-game series at the Birdcage. Monday night will feature "Win Mike Pinto's Money" presented by the South Dakota Lottery.
