St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 16, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints starting pitching staff dazzled during a six game homestand allowing just seven earned runs over 39.2 innings and Jason Godin finished it off on Wednesday afternoon with 7.0 scoreless in a 5-0 victory over the Sioux City Explorers at Midway Stadium in front of 4,906.
Godin, who was released from the Saints before their nine game roadtrip at the beginning of June because of shoulder soreness, was brilliant in second start back with the team. He hurled 7.0 scoreless allowing five hits while walking two and striking out seven. He was able to get out of a first and second no out jam in the first with two strike outs and a foul out. The only other inning he got into trouble was the seventh when he loaded the bases with two outs, but got out of the inning when Michael Roberts grounded out to third.
The Saints got Godin all the offense he needed in the first when Brent Krause reached on an infield single with one out. He moved to second on a wild pitch and went to third on Ole Sheldon's single. Jason Cooper followed with an RBI double to right making it 1-0. Flint Wipke's ground out scored Sheldon to make it 2-0.
The Saints put up two more in the second as Steve Mays led off with a double to left. Brandon Carter then laid down a sacrifice bunt and pitcher David Welch elected to throw to third, but was unable to get Smith. Carter stole second and Coby Smith's single scored Mays and moved Carter to third. Carter scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. Smith finished the game 1-2 with an RBI, three walks and two stolen bases while Mays was 2-3 with two doubles.
The Saints have Thursday off and head to Sioux Falls Stadium for a three game series against the Sioux Falls Pheasants beginning Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Joe Woerman (1-3, 5.74) to the mound. The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
