El Paso Diablos News Release
June 16, 2010 El Paso, TX - A night after the Diablos had one big inning to lead them to a victory, the Pelicans did the same as they dropped El Paso 16-5 at Cohen Stadium on Wednesday night. The Pelicans were helped by a nine run fourth inning which propelled them to victory and allowed them to even up the series.
The Diablos would take the early lead in the second inning when Kyle Nichols disposed of a ball over the left field wall. The Diablos increased their lead to 4-0 in the third inning when Mike Provencher, Bryon Smith and Arnoldo Ponce all had RBI hits. That lead was erased in a big way in the fourth inning. The Pelicans scored nine runs on six hits. They sent 14 men to the plate as the Diablos would use three different pitchers in the inning. The Pelicans added two more runs in the sixth inning. The Diablos would add a run in the sixth inning on Benji Johnson's first home run of the season. The Pelicans would continue to add on runs the rest of the night. Pensacola would add one in each the seventh and eighth innings and tacked on three more in the ninth.
The Pelicans rocked the Diablos pitching staff for 16 hits. El Paso didn't help themselves by issuing nine walks in the game. Overall, the Diablos pitching allowed 26 base runners. D.J. Mattox (3-4) started but could not make it through the fourth inning as he allowed six of the runs. Jared Gothreaux (4-2) picked up the win going six innings and allowing four runs.
The Diablos offense did produce 12 hits in the game. Arnoldo Ponce went 3-5 with an RBI to lead the way. Rico Santana, in his first start with El Paso, went 2-3 with a walk while Kyle Nichols went 2-4 with a walk.
The Diablos go for the series win on Thursday night. They send Aaron Kalb (0-1, 4.24) to the mound against Dane DeValk (1-4, 4.33). It is a Thirsty Thursday as the Diablos offer one dollar beers. Hall of Famer Tony Gwinn will also be in attendance to throw out the first pitch and will also have a meet and greet session before and during the game. First pitch is slated for 7:05.
