Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - On the second day of the 2010 season, Shreveport-Bossier Captains designated hitter Christopher Garcia grounded out twice in his first two at-bats against Fort Worth Cats starter Dwayne Pollok. In his third trip to the plate on May 14, Garcia hit a two-run homer to give the Captains a 2-0 lead in a game they eventually won 3-2. Wednesday night at Fair Grounds Field, Garcia grounded out in his first two at-bats against Pollok again, then launched a two-run homer off the scoreboard in right-center, giving the Captains a 2-1 lead, with Shreveport-Bossier tacking on two more to beat the Cats 4-1 in front of 1,117 fans.

The home run was Garcia's fifth of the year, tying his career high set last season. It erased an early 1-0 deficit that the Captains (18-13) faced against Pollok (3-3), who stranded seven runners in the first four innings - also getting a caught stealing and a double play.

Fort Worth (13-18) got the lead in the first largely thanks to leadoff man Brian Fryer, who walked against Captains starter Ryan DiPietro (2-0) to start the game. Jeremy Sauceda bunted Fryer to second, and he then stole third base. John Allen hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the Cats the early edge. But DiPietro kept the Cats at just the one run for the next five innings, striking out three and allowing five singles in six solid innings. The lefty had two runners on in the second and two more in the fifth, starting a 1-6-3 double play to get out of that inning.

Shreveport-Bossier got their second pair of runs in the sixth, taking advantage of a bout of wildness from Pollok. The Cats righty walked three in the inning and threw a wild pitch, with Bryan Sabatella knocking him out after 5 1/3 innings with a two-run single up the middle.

Cody Railsback struck out the side in the eighth, Jameson Maj allowed a one-out single and struck out two in the eighth and Hector Carrasco pitched a perfect ninth to record his first Captains save.

Notes: Sabatella left the game after getting hit by a pitch in the right elbow against Cats closer Dustin Cameron in the eighth. He is day-to-day...Eight of the nine Captains starters had hits...The Cats have not scored more than one run in a game since last Friday, a span where they have scored three runs in five games...Sauceda had three of the five Fort Worth hits.

The Shreveport-Bossier Captains conclude their three-game series with the Fort Worth Cats on Thursday, June 17, at 7:05 p.m., with 99X Thirsty Thursday. Aside from the discounted beer offerings, fans can win the Bud Light Shirts off Our Backs that the Captains will be wearing during the game. All games are broadcast on ESPN Radio, KRMD-1340 AM as well as streaming live on supertalk1340.com.
