Saints Portillo Tabbed USHL Goalie of the Week
November 19, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - After another stellar weekend, Saints goalie Erik Portillo was named USHL Goalie of the Week for the first time this season. Portillo's weekly honors are the second by a Fighting Saint this season after Aidan McCarthy was also named USHL Goalie of the Week in mid-October.
Portillo is fresh off an impressive weekend that feature two wins and 43 saves in back to back games. Portillo stopped 24 shots and allowed just one goal against the Tri-City Storm on Friday, before turning around and stopping 19 shots the next night in a 5-1 win over Lincoln. Portillo is tied for the USHL lead with eight wins and his 8-1-1 record is the second-best winning percentage among qualified goalies.
Portillo is also top 10 in both other major goaltending categories. He is 10th in the USHL with a .907 save percentage and he ranks second with a 2.17 goals against average. Portillo has been a key component to Dubuque's 10-2-1 start overall. Portillo has one goal allowed in five of his 10 starts this season after two of those exact efforts this past weekend.
As mentioned before, he joins Aidan McCarthy as the other Fighting Saints player to secure weekly honors this season. McCarthy did so after a shutout victory over the Sioux City Musketeers for his first shutout of the season and the only one to date for Dubuque.
