St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (August 24, 2011) - The St. Paul Saints are hitting their stride at the right time, winning their fourth straight ballgame as they defeated the Sioux City Explorers 5-3 on Wednesday Night in front of 4,922 fans at Midway Stadium. The Saints lead in the wild card will remain at one game, with six games left, if Gary Southshore wins their matchup with Lincoln, which was still in progress when the Saints won.
It was an all-around team effort in picking up the clubs 52nd victory of the season. While starting pitcher Alberto Rolon was dealing, his teammates were supporting him with early runs.
The Saints scored got on the board in the first inning. After a single and stolen base from Adam Frost, Shane Costa singled him home to make it 1-0. Frost would then drive in a run of his own with a two out single in the bottom of the second to give the Saints a 2-0 lead.
Frost wouldn't stop there. With runners at first and third and one out in the fourth, he knocked home Aharon Eggleston with another base hit to make it 3-0. After a walk to Costa loaded the bases, Ryan Patterson's infield single put the lead at 4-0.
Rolon picked up his ninth win of the season, going 6.2 strong innings yielding just a pair of runs on five hits, three walks, while striking out three. He ran into trouble in the seventh inning, putting two men on base with two outs. Kyle Foster came on in relief and was greeted by Wally Backman Jr.'s two run double, to cut the Saints lead to 4-2.
The Saints would get that run back in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Priddy with two outs, on a ball hit by Ronnie Bourquin that allowed Ryan Patterson to score.
Foster gave up a two out run in the eighth inning before Tyler Walker shut things down in the ninth, recording his third save of the season.
The third game between these two ballclubs will take place on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints have not named a starter while the Explorers will go with RHP David Trahan (4-1, 2.67). It is "Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame Induction Night" presented by Killebrew Root Beer. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
