St. Paul Saints News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 27, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints never trailed until the final batter of the night and lost on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth 4-3 to the Sioux Falls Pheasants on Friday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.
With the Saints leading 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth Beau Torbert came calling hitting a solo shot to left, his 24th of the season, to tie the game at three.
In the bottom of the ninth the Pheasants won it when the number nine hitter Will Richards led off with a double to right. Joe Anthonsen followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt to the left of the mound and pitcher Marcus McKenzie fielded the ball, but his throw to first with second baseman Brandon Carter covering went awry allowing Richards to score the winning run.
The Saints got off to a great start getting two solo homers in the first. Josh Alley led off the game with a solo homer to left, his eighth of the season to make it 1-0. With two outs Jason Cooper crushed one over the right field wall, his 12th of the season to make it 2-0.
The Pheasants answered in the bottom of the first with one run of their own. Anthonsen led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single from Kevin Carby to make it 2-1.
The Pheasants tied it at two in the third when Anthonsen again led off with a walk. Carby sacrificed him to second and went to third when no one was covering second and Carter's throw to third as pitcher Frank Viola III went to cover bounced out of his glove allowing Anthonsen to reach safely on the error. Reggie Abercrombie's ground out scored Anthonsen tying the game at two.
The game stayed that way until the seventh when Steve Mays reached on a one out single and cored on Alley's RBI triple giving the Saints a 3-2 lead, that lasted until Torbert's homer in the eighth. Alley went 3-4, finishing a double shy of the cycle, with two RBI and a run scored. Alley is two runs shy of the Saints single season mark of 80.
Cooper finished the night 3-4, a triple shy of the cycle with an RBI and a run scored and catcher Nate Hammes, a St. Cloud State graduate, collected his first professional hit with a single to right-center in the fifth.
The same two teams will meet in game three of the four game series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at Sioux Falls Stadium. The Saints send RHP Zach Peterson (6-6, 3.77) to the mound against Pheasants RHP Travis Kane (5-5, 6.58). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
