Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 10-4 to the El Paso Diablos at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.
The loss eliminated the Wingnuts from the wild card race, and with Sioux Falls' win versus St. Paul, the Wingnuts head into Saturday facing elimination. In order to reach the postseason, the Wingnuts need to win their final two games against the Diablos and need Sioux Falls to lose their final two to the Saints.
Behind in the count 1-2, Jeff Vincent led off the game with a solo home run to left-center field against Wingnuts' starter Sean Teague that set the tone for the night.
Carlos Rivera brifly tied the game with a solo shot to right in the bottom of the second, but after the Wingnuts left the bases loaded, El Paso scored three times in the top of the third to take the lead for good. Jonathan Reynoso led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a walk to Vincent. Arnoldo Ponce tripled down the right field line and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch from Teague.
Vincent added a two-out, RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it 5-1. The Diablos extended their lead in the seventh on back-to-back run scoring hits with two outs from Rico Santana and J.D. Reininger.
Jorge Cortes and Rivera sliced the lead to 7-3 with consecutive two-out hits in the bottom of the inning. The Wingnuts then had two on with two out in the eighth when Ryan Patterson hit a deep flyball down the left field line that was ruled foul by home plate umpire Troy Solsaa. Patterson was denied a home run in the first inning as well, this time with third base umpire Bryan Childe making the call on the flyball that was hit over the foul poul during the point in which it crossed over the fence.
Reininger put the game away with a three-run home run to left in the ninth against Cephas Howard before the Wingnuts scored an unearned run against Barry Fowler in the bottom half. Fowler earned the save with 1.1 IP of work.
Teague took the loss, allowing five earned runs in 4.2 IP. Teague struck out three and walked three while allowing five hits. Shaun Ellis earned the win, allowing three earned runs in 6.2 IP.
The series continues tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. Kevin Angelle goes up against left-hander Dustin Birosak. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS.
