El Paso Diablos News Release
Wichita, KS - El Paso was a team with nothing to lose playing a team with everything to lose and it was the team that had nothing to lose who handed the Wichita Wingnuts a tough 10-4 loss at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night. El Paso simply outplayed the Wingnuts from the hitting to the pitching. The loss will drop Wichita two games back in the division with just two games to play.
Jeff Vincent got all the scoring started when he led off the game with a home run. With the game tied at one in the third inning El Paso would take the lead again, this time on an Arnoldo Ponce two RBI triple. Ponce later scored on a wild pitch. El Paso added one more run in the fourth on a Jeff Vincent run scoring single. They added two more in the seventh inning with Rico Santana and J.D. Reininger having back to back RBI doubles. With their lead cut to four Reininger capped off the night with a three run home run in the ninth inning. For the second straight start against Wichita Shaun Ellis turned in a great performance and this time got the offense to back it up. Following his complete game loss to the Wingnuts when he allowed just one run, he pitched into the seventh inning and allowed just three runs on nine hits. It is just the first win for Ellis since July 14 and the first win for any Diablos starter since July 29. In his second straight start against El Paso, Wichita starter Sean Teague would have a tough night. He did not make it out of the fifth inning and allowed five runs on five hits.
El Paso may have been outhit on the scoreboard but the hits they got were bigger hits. J.D. Reininger had a very good night at the plate. After starting the game 0-3 he drove in four runs in his final two at bats with a double and a three run home run. Jeff Vincent went 2-4 drove in two runs and hit his second home run of the season. Rico Santana also had a good night going 2-4 with an RBI and two doubles.
El Paso can go for the series win over the Wingnuts on Saturday night. The pitching match-up will be a battle of two lefthanders. Dustin Birosak (0-1, 6.26) will take the mound for El Paso against Kevin Angelle (2-1, 3.18) who tossed seven shut-out innings against the Daiblos in his last start. First pitch is slated for 6:05.
