Saints Left Stranded in 3-1 Loss to RailCats

GARY, IN (July 30, 2015) - The St. Paul Saints had their opportunities on Thursday night at U.S. Steel Yard. They left at least one man on in eight of nine innings, had a runner in scoring position in six of the nine innings and stranded 13 in a 3-1 loss to the Gary SouthShore Railcats.

It was Saints starter Robert Coe who wiggled out of a first inning jam when J.D. Pulfer walked and Drew Martinez singled him to third. Coe, however, would strike out the next three hitters he faced to end the inning.

The Saints chances began in the second when Mike Kvasnicka led off with a single to left-center. Ryan Lashely followed with a walk. Anthony Phillips laid down a decent bunt towards the third base side, but pitcher Travis McGee fielded it, spun and threw out the lead runner Kvasnicka at third. A strike out and fly out ended the inning.

In the sixth the Saints once again put two men on as Angelo Songco doubled with one out, moved to third on a wild pitch and Mike Kvasnicka walked. McGee was removed from the ballgame for reliever Jessie Snodgrass. He managed to strike out Lashley and Anthony Phillips to end the inning.

The momentum from the top of the inning carried over in the bottom of the inning for the Railcats. With one out Jon Jones doubled off of Coe. With two outs Jose Sermo drilled a fly ball to deep center that Alonzo Harris raced back on, crashed into the wall and the ball ricochet off the wall towards the field of play. Jones scored and Sermo reached third on a triple and scored when Willie Argo had trouble picking up the ball giving the Railcats a 2-0 lead. Coe lasted 6.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits while walking one and striking out eight.

In the seventh the Saints got their lone run when Harris reached on a two out infield single and advanced to second on the throwing error. Argo made it 2-1 with an RBI triple to left-center. Snodgrass was removed for reliever Chris Bodishbaugh. He walked Vinny DiFazio, but struck out Angelo Songco to end the inning.

The Railcats tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Jones singled, stole second and scored on a two out RBI single by Sermo to give the Railcats a two run lead.

The Saints had another chance in the ninth when Argo and DiFazio walked with one out, but Songco struck out and Kvasnicka grounded out to end the game.

The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Friday night at U.S. Steel Yard at 7:10 p.m. The Saints send RHP Dustin Crenshaw (10-1, 2.20) to the mound against Railcats RHP Fernando Gonzalez (1-0, 3.46). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
