Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Gary, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats pitching staff held the St. Paul Saints to one run and first baseman Jose Sermo drove in two runs and scored the other, as the 'Cats downed the best team in the American Association, 3-1 Thursday at the U.S. Steel Yard.
With a runner on second base in the bottom of the sixth inning in a scoreless ballgame, Sermo smoked a deep drive to center field, and came all the way around to score on a "Little League home run," to give the RailCats (29-34) a 2-0 lead.
After St. Paul (48-16) made it a 2-1 game in the seventh, Sermo drove in Jon Jones, who singled, stole second and advanced to third on a fly out, for an eighth-inning insurance run.
'Cats starter Travis McGee went five scoreless innings, and worked out of a couple jams with runners in scoring position. He was bailed out in the sixth by Jessie Snodgrass, who came on and struck out his two batters with runners on the corners.
Chris Bodishbaugh bailed out Snodgrass in the seventh, and worked a scoreless eighth before Andy Loomis notched his 13thsave of the year, and his first since July 13.
For the second time in the past four games, 'Cats manager Greg Tagert was ejected for arguing with home plate umpire Matt Herrera in the game. This time, Herrera ruled RailCats' batter J.D. Pulfer out at home plate for having a foot outside the batter's box to end the bottom of the fifth. Tagert argued and was eventually tossed by Herrera.
Former RailCat Dustin Crenshaw (10-1) gets the nod for the Saints Friday, and he will square off with rookie Fernando Gonzalez (1-0) for the 'Cats.
