Saints Fight the Law and Win, Double up Boulders 16-8

POMONA, NY - The St. Paul Saints took out two days worth of frustration on the Rockland Boulders pounding out a season high 19 hits and scoring a season high 16 runs as they salvaged a game in the series with a 16-8 win over the Rockland Boulders at Provident Bank Park.

All nine Saints hitters collected a hit while seven of the nine had a multi-hit game and Evan Bigley, Brandon Tripp and Henry Wrigley all collected three hits. Tripp tied a franchise mark becoming the 48th player in Saints history to score four runs, the last time was on May 18, 2013 when Joey Becker and Brad Boyer did it against the New Jersey Jackals. Angelo Songco tied a career high with five RBI matching the mark he set on September 3, 2011 when he was in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization at High-A Rancho Cucamonga.

The Saints jumped all over Boulders starter Charlie Law with a five run first inning. With one out Brandon Wikoff and Tripp singled. Wrigley followed with an RBI infield single to short to make it 1-0. Songco then deposited one over the right-center field wall, his second of the season, a three-run blast to make it 4-0. Jake Taylor followed with an infield single, Joe Bonfe walked and Becker made it 5-0 with an RBI double.

The Boulders have proved to be wrecking balls at the plate and they answered with a five spot of their own in the bottom of the inning. With one out Antone DeJesus walked and Ryan Stovall singled. Jerod Edmondson then hit a three-run shot to right-center, his first of the season, to make it 5-3. Stephen Cardullo followed with a triple and he scored on a ground out by Joe Maloney to make it 5-4. Steve Nyisztor, who came in hitting .524, doubled and then scored on a double by Will Walsh to tie it at five.

Saints starter Jeff Shields settled down after than allowing just one more run and worked 5.0 innings allowing six runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out a career tying high seven.

The Saints took the lead in the fourth and never relinquished it as Tripp led off with a single and scored on Wrigley's single to make it 6-5. Three batters later Bonfe made it 7-5 with an RBI single. The Saints tacked on two in the fifth, four in the sixth and three in the seventh.

The Saints bullpen was able to close it out as Mikey Mehlich allowed two runs in 2.0 innings while striking out five and Dylan Thomas pitched 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

The 16 runs and 19 hits were the most the Saints have had since the scored 17 runs and collected 20 hits last June 26 against the Lincoln Saltdogs.

The Saints head to Yogi Berra Stadium to take on the New Jersey Jackals on Friday night at 6:05 p.m. central. The Saints will send RHP Anthony Claggett (3-0, 1.77) against Jackals Keith Bilodeau (0-0, 5.40). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
