Saints Can'T Complete Sweep, Lose 9-4 in Finale to RailCats

GARY, IN (August 9, 2017) - The St. Paul Saints are now three quarters of the way through the 2017 season and for the first time in three seasons they are the one's chasing. Hoping to finish off a sweep of the Gary SouthShore Railcats at U.S. Steel Yard, the Saints gave up 15 hits and committed three errors as their four game winning streak came to an end in a 9-4 loss. They are now 41-34 on the season and fell to 3.5 games back in the North Division and 2.0 games back in the Wild Card (Kansas City and Fargo-Moorhead were still in action at the time of this writing).

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Nate Hanson extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a first inning single to center. That is tied for the sixth longest streak in Saints history with Daryl Motley (1994). Anthony Gallas followed that with a two-run shot to left-center, his 18th of the season.

The lead didn't last long, however, as the Railcats jumped on Matt Schuld in the bottom of the inning. Reggie Wilson walked with one out and scored on a double by Cameron Newell, who advanced to third on a fielding error by center fielder Kes Carter. With two outs Frank Martinez knotted the game at two with an RBI single to right.

The Railcats took the lead for good in the fifth when Wilson led off with a single to right-center. With one out Randy Santiesteban hit a comebacker. Schuld wheeled to throw to second, pumped to throw, but no one covered. As shortstop JJ Gould and Tony Thomas tried to get over Schuld then threw, but the ball glanced off of Thomas' glove into center allowing Wilson to reach third. Martinez made the Saints pay with an RBI single to make it 3-2 Railcats. After a walk to Wilfredo Gimenez, Kris Goodman made it 5-2 with a two-run single.

In the fourth the Railcats added another run as Alex Crosby doubled to right and scored on Wilson's single to center making it 6-2.

The Saints used another long ball to score a run in the sixth as Hanson drilled a solo shot to left, his 11th of the season, making it 6-3.

The Railcats, however, scored two more with two outs in the sixth. Santiesteban singled with two outs and Martinez walked. Gimenez doubled them both home to make it 8-3.

The Saints return home for a four game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries beginning on Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (12-3, 3.26) to the mound against Canaries RHP Miles Nordgren (4-5, 5.02). It is Irish Night presented by Hell-Cat Maggie Irish Whiskey. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities. There is no radio because of the Green Bay Packers pre-season game on Club 1220 KLBB.
