January 17, 2005 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
San Angelo Saints News Release

San Angelo, TX – The San Angelo Saints of the Central Hockey League are back on top of the Southwest Division with a record of 18-13-3 and 39 points, after a 5 point weekend where the Saints lost in a shootout in Austin Friday night and then won back to back games at home versus the Corpus Christi Rayz and the Odessa Jackalopes Saturday and Sunday night.

San Angelo, who had gone only 4-5-1 in their last ten games went into Friday night's game against Austin being the underdog with a road record of 4-10-1 and on a 3 game losing streak. The Saints came out strong, scoring first on a power play goal by Nathan Rosychuk, but soon saw themselves down 3-2 late in the game. Chris Robertson put a shot past Austin goalie Matt Barnes to tie the game and send it into overtime. With no change in the score after the overtime period, the game went to a shoot out where Austin came out with the win, but San Angelo came out with 1 point and enough to help turn them around. San Angelo net-minder Michael Dilorenzo, was strong in net in his first game played as a Saint. The Saints hosted the Corpus Christi Rayz the next night at the Sanctuary, where a rejuvenated Saints team took the ice and dominated the game for the first 40 minutes of play, scoring 4 goals until 2 minutes into the third period when the Rayz were able to put one past Scott Reid. The final score of the night would be 4-2 with the Saints awarded a well deserved two points. The following night would be no different as the new Saints, wearing their road blacks, again dominated the game for the last 40 minutes of play as they won 3-2, giving them enough points to overtake the division.

In other news, the San Angelo Lions Club honored Saints President and General Manager, Jim Cook, Saturday night the Saints' game with a plaque for "Continued Community Service". Saturday Night was Sight Night at the Sanctuary, where people were encouraged to bring and unused glasses to the game for a discount off their tickets. The Lions are recognized worldwide for their service to the blind and visually impaired. "I firmly believe in the mission of the Lions Club," stated Cook. "I encourage every fan of the Saints and the city of San Angelo to get behind this organization and help out in any manner they can."

The Saints will travel to Rio Grande Valley to play the Killer Bees this Friday night before coming home to host the Lubbock Cotton Kings Saturday Night at the Sanctuary at 7:00 PM. The Saints will then travel to Lubbock to play the Kings Sunday evening. For more information on these games or to get tickets, please call the Saints office at 325-653-9577.
