
McIver Goes From The Valley to The Big Apple

HIDALGO, TX: January 17, 2005 â The New York Dragons of the Arena Football League (AFL) added a member of last season's Rio Grande Valley Dorados squad with the acquisition of fullback/linebacker Chris McIver.
McIver appeared in seven games with the Dorados last season and had 11.5 tackles (9 solo) and a sack on defense and had 8 rushes for 12 yards including a touchdown on the offensive side of the ball. The 6'1" 275-pounder joined the Dorados on June 17th as a free agent. He is a native of Ft. Knox, Kentucky, who moved and grew up in San Antonio, becoming a product of Taft High School. McIver had a stellar college career at the University of North Texas from 1999 - 2002. He recorded 213 tackles, 10 sacks, 17 tackles-for-loss and 3 pass deflections. As a senior in 2002, he earned Sun Belt Conference Second Team All-Conference honors, was a defensive captain and was a five-time Defensive Player of the Game. The 24 year-old was awarded the Bill Bishop Award in 2001 as the most outstanding defensive lineman. In 2001, he earned Second Team All-Sun Belt Conference honors. He closed out his college career as a part of UNT's 2003 New Orleans Bowl championship squad and was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in 2003. McIver signed a contract with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League in December, but was later released.
The Dorados have two other members from last season's squad currently on AFL rosters. Eddie Moten is with the Philadelphia Soul and Preston Hartfield is a member of the New Orleans Voo Doo. The three are each going through training camp with their respective clubs and are seeking to make it through the team's cuts, which must be made by January 24th. The AFL opens its 19th season on Friday, January 28th and continues a national television agreement for a third season with NBC. In the AFL's opening weekend, Philadelphia is at Austin (Sunday, January 30th, 11 AM, NBC) and New Orleans is at Georgia (Saturday, January 29th, 6 PM), while New York is in a bye week.
The Dorados kick-off their 2005 campaign April 9th at the Dodge Arena, as they host the Louisville Fire.
