Saints Add Seasoned Arm to Bullpen, Sign Mike Koons

ST. PAUL, MN (June 18, 2013) - After Cole Nelson had his contract purchased by the Atlanta Braves organization the St. Paul Saints needed to find a pitcher and fast. They turned to someone who has several seasons of pitching experience and began the year in the American Association, right-handed reliever Mike Koons.

The 27-year-old began the 2013 season with the El Paso Diablos of the American Association and was 1-2 with a 5.06 ERA and two saves in 10 games. In 10.2 innings pitched he walked just three and struck out 12 while opponents hit .311 against him. He had two rough relief appearances, but did not allow a run in five consecutive appearances (5.1 IP) from May 25-Jun 4, including an inning of perfect relief against the Saints at Midway Stadium on the 25th.

Koons was a non-drafted free agent signee by the Houston Astros in 2007 after his time at San Diego State University. He pitched two seasons for the Astros organization spending 2007 at Tri-City in the New York-Penn League and spent all of 2008 at Single-A Lexington in the South Atlantic League. Since 2009 he has played for five different Independent League teams compiling a 10-10 record with a 4.45 ERA.

The Saints made two additional roster moves activating starting pitcher Anthony Claggett from the disabled list, who will start tonight, and placed infielder Ole Sheldon on the 7-day disabled list.

The Saints roster stands at the league maximum 22 player, 10 pitchers and 12 position players.
