St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (June 18, 2013) - The biggest bat in the St. Paul Saints lineup seemed to wake the entire team up and jolted them from their three game losing streak as they defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 8-5 on Tuesday night at Midway Stadium in front of 3,756.
With the Saints trailing 1-0 going to the bottom of the third a base running blunder nearly cost the Saints. Dwight Childs led off with a walk. Dan Kaczrowski's grounder to short forced Childs at second. Adam Frost followed with a walk putting runners at first and second. That's when the Saints nearly cost themselves. Joey Becker singled to right and as Kaczrowski rounded third, third base coach Lamarr Rogers put up the stop sign. Frost didn't see the stop sign and headed to third, meaning the Saints now had two runners standing on third. Kaczrowski was tagged out. Brad Boyer then drew a walk to load the bases. Up stepped Craig Brazell. He drilled a shot over the right-center field wall for a grand slam home run, his fourth homer of the season, to give the Saints a 4-1 lead. It was the Saints first grand slam since Ole Sheldon hit one on June 12, 2012 vs. Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.
The Goldeyes, however, managed to come back. They got to within 4-2 in the fourth on an RBI single from Nick Liles. In the fifth Amos Ramon led off with a walk. He would steal second and with two outs Leonard Davis walked. Fehlandt Lentini and Luis Alen had back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game at four.
The Saints offense answered quickly in the bottom of the fifth as Boyer led off with a double. After a wild pitch moved him to third Willie Cabrera knocked him home with a one out single to give the Saints a 5-4 lead. Brandon Tripp was hit by a pitch and Jose Hernandez made it 6-4 with an RBI single. Childs walked to load the bases and Dan Kaczrowski's fielder's choice drove in the third run of the inning to make it 7-4.
The same two teams meet in the finale of the three game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. The Saints send RHP Mark Hamburger (1-2, 5.75) to the mound against the Goldeyes RHP Justin Garcia (4-1, 3.32). We Play the Game of Thrones Across the Pond and Across the River as we Guess the name of the Royal Babies. The game can be heard on Club 1220 AM and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
