
RailCats Rally Past Wingnuts

WICHITA, KS - The Wichita Wingnuts (20-11) lost 7-6 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (15-14) in the opener of a day-night double header at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The RailCats scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to come away with the win. Adam Klein drew back-to-back, one-out walks to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base. Cristian Guerrero loaded the bases with a bloop single to left. Craig Maddox walked with the bases loaded to force home Klein with the tying run, while Massaro scored on Zac Mitchell's sacrifice fly to center to make it 7-6.
The Wingnuts had two hits against RailCats' closer Clay Zavada in the bottom of the ninth but ultimately fell short by one run. Nine of Wichita's 11 losses this season have been one-run games.
Zavada earned the save while Josh Dew took the loss for Wichita. Taylor Sewitt earned the win in relief for the RailCats.
Gary scored four times with two outs in the top of the first to take the early lead. With the bases loaded and two outs, Brian Kolb drew a walk on a full count to force in the game's first run. Drew Martinez reached first on an infield single on a groundball to shortstop that made it 2-0. Danny Pulfer followed with a bloop double down the right field line that scored two more runs.
The Wingnuts scored five times in the bottom half to take the lead. Jake Kahaulelio walked with one out and went to third on a John Rodriguez single to right. C.J. Ziegler cut the lead to 4-1 when he doubled to the left-center field fence. Brent Clevlen tied it with a three-run home run to right field. After Clevlen's homer, Abel Nieves singled to center and stole second base. Nieves went to third on David Amberson's infield single, and scored on an errant throw to second by Maddox when Amberson tried to steal.
The RailCats briefly tied the game in the top of the fourth when Chase Tucker grounded into a double play. Ziegler homered to deep left-center in the bottom of the fifth to put Wichita back in front.
Chris Smith started and took a no-decision for the Wingnuts. Smith allowed five earned runs on six hits in six innings. Smith walked three and struck out five.
Alain Quijano started for Gary SouthShore and also took a no-decision. Quijano allowed six runs, five earned, on 10 hits in seven frames. Quijano walked two and struck out four.
Nick Walters and Daniel Bennett each worked a scoreless inning for Wichita. Nieves had two hits and has hit safely in 10 straight games.
