
Saginaw Spirit Use Strong Power Play in Preseason Win

The Saginaw Spirit turned in a solid first period in the first of a home and home set with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, led by production from their power play. First year forward Artem Artemov opened the scoring at 7:57 of the opening period during a goalmouth scramble converting the rebound on a point shot by Daniel De Sousa. Marcus Crawford also assisted on the play. De Sousa was also instrumental in the second power play goal in the period for the Spirit, adding a goal with the extra man. Kris Bennett fed a perfect pass to De Sousa for the lead assist with the other going to Connor Brown at 15:27. Shots on goal were 13-11 for Sault Ste. Marie.
The Spirit added two more goals to their 2-0 first period advantage. Mitchell Stephens provided the Spirit their first even strength goal of the night as he beat Sault Ste. Marie starting goaltender Joseph Raaymakers at 6:04. The lone assist went to Kris Bennett. Artem Artemov scored his second of the game and the Spirit's third power play goal of the night as he banged home a rebound at 9:17. Assists on the play went to Marcus Crawford and Luke Cairns. The Greyhounds finally solved Spirit goaltender Nikita Serebryakov as Gabe Guertler scored at 7:57 of the second with Tyler Hore gaining the only assist. Shots on goal were 15-10 for Sault Ste. Marie.
The third period saw the two teams exchange goals starting with a tally by the Greyhounds to slice the Spirit lead in half at 4-2. Defenseman Gustav Bouramman had a shot from the blue line slip through a screen with Gabe Guertler and David Miller recording assists at the 48 second mark. The Spirit restored their three goal advantage at 5:48 of the third as rookie Tye Felhaber scored a nice goal in close, with assists going to Kris Bennett and Sean Callaghan to make the final 5-2. Final shots on goal read 41 for Sault Ste. Marie and 27 for the Spirit.
These two teams will meet for the Spirit's final preseason game tomorrow night at the Essar Center in Sault Ste. Marie at 7:05. Saginaw will open the 2014-2015 OHL regular season on Wednesday, Sepetmeber 24th against the Erie Otters and Saturday, September 27th against the Sarnia Sting. Both games are 7:11 starts.
