Altoona Curve News Release
RICHMOND, Va. - Casey Sadler's comfort away from home continued on Friday night with the right hander spinning seven scoreless innings to lead the Curve by the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 2-1, in the first game Altoona's seven-game road trip. In his last two road starts, Sadler (5-3) has not allowed an earned run in 15 combined innings.
He and Squirrels starter Craig Westcott (2-4), who were meeting for the second time in less than a week, both faced the minimum through the first three innings. Sadler actually faced the minimum through four and had help doing so with a pick off of Jarrett Parker in the first, a caught stealing in the third and an inning-ending double play in the fourth.
His offense went to bat for him in the fifth and scored the first run of the game on the first pitch of the inning. Jarek Cunningham was the one that took Westcott's first offering of the frame deep over the left field wall to place Altoona in front, 1-0.
Richmond threatened to tie the game in the sixth off Sadler when Ryan Lollis tried to score from second base on Parker's ball through the right side. Curve right fielder Alex Dickerson came up firing and put a throw on the money to nail Lollis at the plate and keep the Curve in front.
Sadler tossed a perfect seventh in his final inning of work and ended his night with three strikeouts and a pair of walks. Jhonathan Ramos pitched a scoreless eighth before the Curve added an insurance run in the ninth. Andrew Lambo worked a leadoff walk, stole second and move to third on a throwing error by the catcher Andrew Susac. He came home later in the inning thanks to Carlos Paulino's RBI groundout.
That run loomed large in the bottom of the inning when Richmond was finally able to crack the scoreboard off Jason Townsend. Townsend recovered after the sac fly by Javier Herrera to retire Mark Minicozzi with a strikeout to end the game.
With the victory, the Curve have now won five of their last six games and eight of the last 11.
Altoona (19-22) and Richmond (19-20) will meet in the second of three beginning at 6:05 p.m. Saturday night at The Diamond. Pirates RHP Jeff Karstens is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Curve on Saturday after he made his first rehab with High-A Bradenton on Monday. In that start, Karstens pitched three innings and allowed one run while striking out four. He'll be opposed on Saturday by Richmond's LHP Chris Gloor (1-1, 5.22).
Airtime on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. For tickets and information on the Curve's Memorial Day Weekend homestand that begins Friday, call 877.99.CURVE, visit AltoonaCurve.com or stop by the ticket windows at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
