THE GAME
Sacramento leads the all-time series 2-1 over Hartford although both teams were playing in different cities in 2009. The Sacramento Mountain Lions were the California Redwoods, playing in the Bay Area, while the Hartford Colonials were the New York Sentinels. Hartford topped Sacramento 27-10 in the season opener in Connecticut on Sept. 18 this season. Hartford (1-4) hasn't won since while the Mountain Lions (2-3) have beaten Florida twice and lost to Omaha and Las Vegas since that opening game. Three of Hartford's four losses have been by five points or less and the Colonials have turned the ball over 13 times during their four-game losing streak. The game will be broadcast on VERSUS and be carried on the radio at KHTK 1140. A Sacramento victory would keep the Mountain Lions in the race to play in the championship game in Omaha on Nov. 27.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Hartford, playing at home in the season opener on Sept. 18, jumped ahead 27-0 and went on to win 27-10. Quarterback Josh McCown and running back Lorenzo Booker connected for a UFL-record 80-yard touchdown pass and Hartford gained 448 yards of offense. Sacramento gained 201 yards of offense and was held to 35 yards rushing.
KEY MATCHUP NO. 1
Sacramento running back Cory Ross vs. Hartford outside linebacker Simoni Lawrence. Ross has a UFL-high 37 catches this season, having combined for 20 over the last two games. He also has combined for 311 yards from scrimmage over the last two contests. Lawrence is coming off a 10-tackle performance.
KEY MATCHUP NO. 2
Hartford running back Lorenzo Booker vs. Sacramento safety Andrew Sendejo. Booker has excelled as a screen-catching running back and he also leads the team in rushing. Sendejo had a big all-around game in Florida last week, recording 4.5 tackles, two tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a pass breakup.
CORY ROSS ON A ROLL
Sacramento running back Cory Ross, the UFL's leading rusher a year ago, has put up big numbers two weeks in a row. He followed up a very strong game against Las Vegas (UFL-record 10 receptions, 82 yards; 15 carries, 71 yards) with a very solid game against Florida a week ago. Ross had 10 catches for 88 yards in the win over the Tuskers and he also added 70 rushing yards on 25 carries. Ross now has a UFL-high 37 receptions for 298 yards and he has rushed 80 times for 224 yards. He rushed for 462 yards on 117 carries a year ago in a six-game season. Each UFL team will play eight games this season.
CULPEPPER NAMED OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sacramento quarterback Daunte Culpepper was named the UFL's Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 21-17 victory over the Florida Tuskers in Orlando a week ago. He ran in a nine-yard touchdown on fourth-down and five with about two minutes left in the game, putting the Mountain Lions up 18-17. He also had a six-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Maxwell in the game. Playing on the same field where he starred in college, at the University of Central Florida, Culpepper completed 31-of-49 passes for 259 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Culpepper has completed 124-of-209 passes for 1,229 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions through the first five games. Hartford defensive end Derek Walker was named the UFL's Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in a 24-21 loss at Las Vegas. Walker returned a fumble 83 yards for a touchdown in the loss.
SOMETHING HAS TO GIVE
The Sacramento Mountain Lions have not won a game against a team other than the Florida Tuskers since Oct. 29, 2009. The Mountain Lions were the California Redwoods at that time. The Hartford Colonials are 0-5 all-time in road games. Something has to give tonight at Hornet Stadium.
TIGHT END NATE LAWRIE COMING OFF HIS BEST GAME OF SEASON
Sacramento Mountain Lions tight end Nate Lawrie hauled in eight passes for 58 yards in last week's 21-17 victory over the Florida Tuskers after combining for three catches for 35 yards over the three previous games. He was not with the team in the season-opening loss at Hartford. Lawried played for the California Redwoods in 2009 and was selected by the Tampa Bay Bucs in the sixth round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He also has NFL experience with Philadelphia, New Orleans, Baltimore and Cincinnati.
