Johnson's Return Catalyzes Mountain Lions First Win

October 20, 2012 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Sacramento Mountain Lions News Release

Friday marked the first time the Mountain Lions' star quarterback Josh Johnson played a full game this season. It was also the night when the team got its first win.

Sacramento (1-3) won the turnover battle 3-0 and escaped with the 20-17 win over the Virginia Destroyers (1-3).

"Great team win. Offense, defense, special teams. Everyone chipped in," Johnson said. "I'm just happy for this team. We've had the little things go wrong, week in and week out. We finally put one together and I feel like we can get right back in this thing."

The Mountain Lions had been plagued by sloppy offense every since Johnson left the first game of the season with a left knee injury. In his first game back, he passed for 159 yards completing 13 of 22 passes, while getting some key first down runs.

Tyrell Sutton backed up his outstanding performance on the ground last week with another on Friday, before leaving the game with a knee strain. His 38-yard score in the second quarter set the tone for his team, as he left a number of defenders in his trail, including a defense back who got the bad end of Sutton's right shoulder.

He finished with 86 rushing yards on just 12 carries, giving an average of 7.2.

But it was the Mountain Lions defense that made some of the game's most important plays. Linebacker Kyle Knox forced two fumbles from quarterback Chris Greisen deep in Virginia's territory that led to a combined 10 points. Sacramento was able to overcome the Destroyers 355-296 advantage in offensive yards.

The Mountain Lions have a short turnaround, as they travel to Omaha to take on the Night Hawks on Tuesday night.
