Mountain Lions Fail to Rebound After Poor Start, Fall to 0-2

October 6, 2012 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Sacramento Mountain Lions News Release

Things started about as poorly as they could have for the visiting Mountain Lions, as they fell behind 17-0 in the first half and couldn't comeback against the defending UFL champion Destroyers, falling short 37-29.

"I challenged them after the first half," head coach Turk Schonert said. "Guys showed me that they got heart and they're willing to fight."

There were few bright spots for Sacramento, who was missing starting quarterback Josh Johnson with a knee contusion he suffered in the team's week one loss to Omaha. The team was able to trim the deficit to eight with just over five seconds remaining, but couldn't gather the onside kick for the miracle comeback.

One of those bright spots was kick returner Teddy Williams, who sped his way to a to a 90-yard score in the third quarter. But at that point, it was too little, too late for Sacramento as the offense was ineffective for a majority of the night.

Tight end Dominique Byrd caught a five-yard touchdown pass, which made it a 7-17 game early in the second quarter.

After scoring two touchdowns in the season opener, Demetrius Williams was able to find the end zone twice in the second half, giving him four in the season's first two weeks. His final score came with just over five second left, trimming Destroyers' lead to eight.

"Tomorrow night we have to start on Vegas. We got to go to work, we have a lot of work to get to on Sunday," Schonert said."

The loss puts Sacramento at 0-2. The team has a quick turnaround however, and will return home to face the Las Vegas Locomotives on Wednesday, Oct. 10. The team expects quarterback Josh Johnson to return to the starting lineup. --303371348-908100278-1349528667=:7450
