SaberCats lose two in expansion draft
October 6, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 6, 2006) - RASHIED DAVIS has been playing in the National Football League with the Chicago Bears for the past two seasons and JOHN KUHN has never put on a SaberCats uniform, yet both players were selected off the San Jose roster by the New Orleans VooDoo in the Arena Football League expansion draft today.
The draft was held to help stock the roster of the VooDoo, making its return to the AFL in 2007 following a one-year hiatus due to Hurricane Katrina.
Davis, a former San Jose State University star, played four seasons with the SaberCats before signing a three-year deal with the Bears on June 2, 2005. He set team season records with 44 touchdowns and 264 points while twice matching a game record with seven touchdowns scored during the 2005 season.
Kuhn was signed by the SaberCats on October 18, 2005, but never reported to San Jose. The fullback from Shippensburg (Pa.) University signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad in November 2005 and re-signed with the NFL club last February. He is currently listed on the Steelers practice roster.
Both players were on the SaberCats exempt list.
The SaberCats are a premier franchise in the AFL, having captured two ArenaBowl titles, six Western Division championships, seven consecutive playoff appearances and owning the league's best regular season record this decade. San Jose will begin its 13th season in the AFL next February.
