August 30, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, N.J. - Bryan Sabatella drove in three runs, Nick Giarraputo homered and scored three times, and A.J. Wideman fired seven shutout innings as the New Jersey Jackals (55-33 overall, 28-13 second half) defeated the Newark Bears, 6-1, to notch their eighth straight win on Tuesday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

In the Jackals' fastest game of the year at two hours, eight minutes, Wideman (7-2) earned a win for the seventh consecutive start. Wideman, who becomes just the second Can-Am League hurler to win seven straight games this season, allowed just two singles while walking a pair of batters and striking out four.

The Jackals opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning against Newark starter Brian Parker. After Nick Giarraputo led off with a single and Mike DeJesus walked, Chris White laid down a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position with one out. The next batter, Sean Smith, lifted a sacrifice fly to center to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead before Sabatella singled to make it 2-0.

That score held until the bottom of the seventh when Sabatella laced a two-run, two-out triple to center field to extend the Jackals' lead to 4-0. Both runs were unearned against Parker after Giarraputo reached to lead off the frame on an error by Newark shortstop Chase Fontaine.

A two-run home run by Giarraputo in the bottom of the eighth helped the Jackals build up a 6-0 lead.

Newark finally broke through in the top of the ninth inning. With the Bears down to their final out, Caleb Stewart ripped a double inside third base before Danny Santiesteban tripled into the right field corner to cap the scoring at 6-1.

Parker (0-2) suffered the loss, yielding four runs (two earned) on seven hits over seven innings. Josh Ellis struck out four batters in two innings of relief for New Jersey.

The Jackals and Bears play the middle contest of their three-game series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends southpaw Isaac Pavlik (12-4, 2.72 ERA) to the mound against left-hander Alex Smith (9-2, 3.04 ERA) at Yogi Berra Stadium.
