Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The San Jose Giants slugged a pair of home runs off rehabbing Dodger Hyun-Jin Ryu, as the Quakes dropped the series-opener against the Giants by a score of 4-2 on Friday night at LoanMart Field.

A sell-out crowd of 4894 saw Ryu make just his second career appearance in the minor leagues and his first at LoanMart Field.

Ryu looked like he was off to a good start, but after getting the first two hitters of the game, Andrew Susac reached on a throwing error, extending the inning. Ryu's next pitch was crushed to center field, as Chris Shaw smashed his eighth homer of the year, putting the Giants in front, 2-0.

After a 1-2-3 second, Ryu allowed a solo-shot to Ronnie Jebavy one out into the third inning, making it a 3-0 lead for San Jose. Steven Duggar followed with a single, but Ryu coaxed a ground ball out of Susac, as the Quakes turned two to end the inning and wrap up Ryu's night after 44 pitches.

The Quakes struck for a run in the fourth, as Joey Curletta tucked one inside the foul pole down the left-field line for his fifth home run of the year, making it 3-1 against Giants' starter Jordan Johnson (5-2).

Rancho pulled to within one in the seventh, as Erick Mejia reached on his third hit of the night, then scored on Kyle Garlick's two-out single to right, giving him a league-best 36 RBIs and making it a 3-2 game against reliever Jose Reyes.

The Giants got a crucial insurance run in the ninth though, as Felipe Gonzalez, who worked a total of five innings on Friday night, allowed his lone run of the night. Duggar singled and eventually scored from third base on a groundout by C.J Hinojosa, giving San Jose some breathing room at 4-2.

The Quakes went in order in the ninth, as Giants' closer Rodolfo Martinez earned his league-best 11th save with a perfect frame.

Ryu (0-1) allowed a total of three runs, one earned on three hits over three innings, striking out one batter. Through a translator, Ryu said that his surgically repaired shoulder felt good and suggested that his next start would not be for Rancho Cucamonga. The Quakes head to Bakersfield after the completion of the San Jose series.
