Lancaster Stormers News Release

A fast start, including a three run homerun by Matt Chavez in the third inning, propelled the Sugar Lank Skeeters over the Lancaster Barnstormers, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The Skeeters took control early, scoring six of their seven runs in the first four innings.

Lacnaster starter Jonathan Albaladejo (7-5), startinging his fourth game in the last 12 days, wnet five innings, while allowing six runs on 11 hits. The former big leaguer struck out three and walked one.

Sugar Land took a page out of the Barnstormers' Saturday playbook by scoring in the first inning. Barrett Barnes started the game with a leadoff double to left and scored on a one out double by catcher Derek Norris to the right center field gap. One out later, first baseman Matt Chavez, the offensive star of the afternoon, ripped an RBI single through the middle to bring Norris around for the game's second run.

The Skeeters took advantage in the third inning as well. Both Norris and Hawkins reached on back to back singles before Chavez lofted his eighth homerun of the year onto the Haller Pavilion in right field, making it a 5-0 game. In five at bats, Chavez registered three hits and four RBI's.

For Lancaster's Albaladejo, it officially marked the first time he had given up more than three runs in a game since May 4th (opening night at Clipper Magazine Stadium against York). The final run charged to Albaladejo's line was Norris' sacrifice fly that drove home Barnes. Sugar Land's last run came in the eighth off reliever Stephen Johnson. The right-hander walked the first two batters he saw and later allowed Norris to reach on a hit by pitch. With Javier Betancourt at third, Courtney Hawkins reached on an RBI fielder's choice after Josh Bell was unable to grip the baseball for a potential double play.

James Russell (6-3) was dominant over seven strong innings of no run, seven hit baseball, coupled with five K's of his own. Lancaster was able to strike with six hits, including two doubles, over his last three innings but was never able to get a run on the board.

Josh Bell had a leadoff double to the wall in center to start out the fifth, but was caught in a rundown on his way to third on a comebacker by Vladimir Frias. Darien Sandford singled in the sixth and eventually got to third off a long single by Blake Gailen, who was retired on a force out to end the inning. The 'Stormers looked poised for an opportunity again in the seventh with Vladimir Frias singling and then being brought to third by Anderson De La Rosa's double, but were vanquished once Carlos Garcia grounded out to cancel the rally efforts.

The Barnstormers have an off day Monday before continuing the homestand Tuesday night when the Road Warriors come to town. It will be a battle of lefties in the opener, with Lancaster's John Anderson (2-2, 3.69 ERA) dueling southpaw Andres Caceres (2-1, 4.20 ERA). Caceres through a no-hitter in a rain-shortened five inning affair between these ball clubs in July. Tickets for the remaining games of this homestand are available online or at the Two Dudes Box Office. Fans may also tune in on BRC-11 and the Lancaster Barnstormers' YouTube Channel, with each broadcast starting at 7p.m.

NOTES: Frias extended a hitting streak to eight games...Matt Marksberry threw his 14th straight scoreless appearance...He last allowed a run on June 19...Kaleb Fleck has gone six innings, only allowing two hits with nine strikeouts since joining the club...Darian Sandford was unable to steal a base on Sunday and is still tied for the Barnstormers' all-time career lead in that category...Six of Bell's nine hits have gone for extra bases.
