Rapid City Rush News Release
(Loveland, CO) - The Rapid City Rush were dealt their first overtime loss of the season in a 4-3 shootout decision to the Colorado Eagles. The Rush sent the game into overtime in the final seconds of regulation, but the Eagles came away with their eighth straight victory of the year.
The Eagles and Rush skated to an even first period with both captains finding the net and shots nearly square at 11-10 for Colorado. The Eagles got on the board first when Matt Glasser made his way past the Rush defense and centered a pass to Riley Nelson who picked up his sixth of the season. The Rush would even the score late in the period while on the powerplay as Scott Wray fired a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle that beat goaltender Kyle Jones.
It took until the 2:24 mark of the third period, but the Rush would gain their first lead of the game with a goal from Jamie VanderVeeken who was playing his first game back from leave of absence. Ryan Menei slid a pass to VanderVeeken at the blueline and the defenseman fired a low wrist shot that made its way through a screen for a 2-1 lead. The lead would last all of fifteen seconds as the Eagles would regain the lead with goals 31 seconds apart. The first was scored by Daymen Rycroft who slid a shot home into an open net after a broken play deep in the Rapid City zone. An odd-man rush then led to Steve Haddon's sixth goal of the season that gave the Eagles a 3-2 lead. The contest looked to be in the bag, but the late extra-attacker for Rapid City would pay off. With just seventeen seconds left, a scramble at the side of the net eventually led to Derek LeBlanc lifting a backhand shot home to even the score and force overtime.
With neither team finding the back of the net in the extra period, the contest went to a shootout. In the shootout, Kevin Ulanksi and Scott May lit the lamp for the Eagles while all four Rush shooters were stopped by Kyle Jones on their attempts, securing the 4-3 win.
The Rush ended the evening 1-for-6 on the powerplay while the penalty kill was perfect for the second straight game, stopping all six Eagles chances.
The Rush now play a pair of games at home this weekend. On Friday, November 12th the Rush will face the Mississippi RiverKings before battling the Tulsa Oilers on Saturday, November 13th. Both games are set for 7:05pm at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Tickets are still available.
