Evansville IceMen News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN.--- At a special news conference today in downtown Evansville, Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel announced that the Central Hockey League's Evansville IceMen have been awarded the hockey rights to play in the new Evansville Downtown Arena which is scheduled to be open in November of 2011.

The decision was reached by a city council appointed committee which provided recommendations to the council for the ultimate determination.

"We are especially excited about his announcement today and the overall impact that it will have on our league, stated CHL Commissioner Duane Lewis. "Ron Geary and his staff have worked very hard to establish the IceMen brand in Evansville and are much deserving to continue to build on their tradition moving into this first class facility."

The IceMen joined ranks with the CHL during the off-season after competing in the All-American Hockey League in previous seasons, capturing the 2009-10 AAHL Championship. The IceMen presently perform in the 1,500 seat Swonder Ice Arena.

"We are so pleased to be presented this opportunity to be the hockey tenant of this extraordinary building, stated an elated IceMen Team Owner and Club President Ron Geary. "We understood the overall process with the full knowledge of the competitive nature of this project. The IceMen organization is both thrilled and at the same time well-prepared to meet the challenges that lie ahead in making Evansville IceMen CHL pro hockey a top-flight going concern in our wonderful community. Our many, many fans love IceMen hockey and the love will grow even deeper in this great facility which all of Evansville will be proud of."

The new Evansville Arena is still under construction and is slated to open its doors in November 2011. The 11,000 seat state-of-the-art facility will be one of the finest in all of professional hockey and the IceMen team will share with athletics from the University of Evansville (namely the men's and women's basketball teams).
