August 12, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Detroit City FC News Release
DETROIT, Michigan - Detroit City FC will be playing in front of a home crowd for the first time since July 23rd this coming Saturday. They will be hosting the Western Division's Oakland Roots SC at Keyworth Stadium at 7:30pm on Saturday August 13th. The match will be streamed on ESPN+ and TV20.
Last weekend in the Sunshine State, City's five-match undefeated streak was snapped against the Tampa Bay Rowdies with a 1-0 loss. Tampa scored to take the lead in the 64th minute when forward Steevan Dos Santos jumped on a rebound off an initial shot by midfielder Lewis Hilton. Tampa controlled the majority of the game with 63.5% of possession, 200 more passes than City and they dominated in shots with 29, compared to Detroit's six.
Detroit CIty FC now has an 9-8-5 record, which has them currently sitting in sixth place in the USL Championship Eastern Conference, just 14 points off first place Louisville City. They are six points behind fifth place Birmingham Legion, with a game in hand.
Goalkeeper Nate Steinwascher continues to be a team leader defensively this season. Last weekend in Tampa, Steinwascher made seven saves, his most in a match this season. He is in fourth place in the league with 64 saves, he has conceded 21 goals this season and has seven clean sheets, good for seventh place. He is also fourth place in the league with a 75.3% save percentage.
For the first time since picking up an injury in the July 6th matchup against Hartford Athletic at home, Stephen Carroll returned to the backline for Le Rouge. In his first game back, he played the full 90 minutes, made four clearances and one interception. Carroll has played and started in 18 games this season, for a total of 1,572 minutes. He leads the team with his 55 clearances and 21 blocks, and he is second on the team with 35 interceptions. He has two goals on the season, with one of them being the game winner in stoppage time versus the Hartford Athletic in April. Carroll was named to the Team of the Week during week 15.
The Oakland Roots currently sit in 10th place in the Western Conference, with a 6-11-7 record.
In their past five games in league play, the Roots have a 1-2-2 record. Their lone win in their past five matches came against El Paso Locomotive (4-0). In their most recent game, they had a 0-0 draw versus Phoenix Rising FC. They also had a 3-3 draw with Sacramento Republic FC and losses to LA Galaxy II (3-1) and Las Vegas United FC (2-0).
Forward Óttar Magnús Karlsson, who is on loan at the Roots from Serie B side Venezia, is near the top of the league leaderboard as he sits alone in second place for goals this season with 15. He also stands alone in second place with 55 shots in total. His 39 shots on target leads the team, as do his 103 aerial duels. With 19 chances created, he holds the third place spot on the Roots. Proving that while he's a lethal finisher, he can also set up teammates for opportunities to score as well. Karlsson has been named to Team of the Week twice this season during weeks 13 and 19.
Defender Tarek Morad has 1,285 passes on the season, good for seventh place overall in the league. He leads the Roots with 73 clearances, 51 aerial duels won and an 89.7% passing accuracy.
This weekend's match is the start of yet another busy week for Le Rouge as they travel to Alabama this Wednesday to take on Birmingham Legion FC at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama. Kickoff is scheduled for 8PM.
It will be a quick turnaround following the match in Birmingham as Detroit City FC welcome the high-flying Louisville City FC to Keyworth Stadium next Saturday, August 20. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 7:30PM.
