RubberDucks Utilize Timely Hitting and Clutch Bullpen to Outduel Fightin' Phils, 3-1

The RubberDucks use a two-run sixth and clutch pitching to down the stretch to defeat the Reading Fightin' Phils 3-1 on Tuesday night as Union Home Mortgage Welcomed Fans back Home to Canal Park.

Turning Point

Akron and Reading were tied at one run a piece entering the bottom of the sixth, but Bo Naylor would break that tie by singling home Andruw Monasterio with a line shot into right field. Akron would add on two batters later when Alex Call singled home Richie Palacios with two outs to stretch the RubberDucks lead to 3-1, where the RubberDucks

Mound Presence

Juan Hillman got the start for the RubberDucks and worked out of a two on and one out jam by striking out the last two of the inning. This allowed Hillman to settle in until the fourth inning when Reading would score one on a home run and load the bases, but Hillman would get a pop out to Naylor to escape. In total Hillman would go six and only allow the one run. Juan Móta would relieve Hillman and strikeout the side in his first inning. But after giving up a single and hitting a batter, Nick Mikolajchak would get a fly out and a strikeout to keep Reading off the board. Mikolajchak would work out of a one-out jam in the ninth by getting a flyout and a strikeout to end the game.

Duck Tales

The RubberDucks opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the first when Palacios walked and later came around to score on a wild pitch. However, after pushing across the opening run of the ballgame, the Ducks could not capitalize with two runners in scoring position, leaving the opening frame with only a one-run lead. The Akron bats would finally come alive in the bottom of the sixth when they manufacturing three hits, out of only four total, to gain a two-run advantage. As a team the Ducks left four runners stranded and were a combined 2-for-6 with RISP.

Notebook

Mikolajchak's save was the first save of the season for a RubberDucks pitcher... Tyler Freeman extended his hitting streak to 8 games and on-base steak to 10 games with a single in the sixth... Palacios' walk in the first was his ninth of the season, which broke his tie with Will Benson for the team lead... Monasterio's walk in the sixth was the first and only time the Ducks leadoff man reached... Time: 2:36 ... Attendance: 1,874
