Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron's Sam Haggerty drove in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Akron RubberDucks posted a thrilling, come-from-behind, 8-7 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies Friday night at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio.
Turning Point
The RubberDucks (52-38) scored twice in the bottom of the 11th to win the game. Tyler Krieger singled off David Roseboom (1-2) to drive in designated runner Willi Castro to tie the game, 7-7. Krieger took second on a wild throw and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Mark Mathias off Ponies reliever Corey Taylor. Haggerty, who already had two doubles and an RBI, launched a deep fly ball to center, easily scoring Krieger with the game-winner.
Mound Presence
Six pitchers saw action for the RubberDucks. David Speer (2-2) won it in relief after working the top of the 11th. Speer gave up a run on a sacrifice fly by Josh Allen to give the Rumble Ponies (43-46) a brief 7-6 lead. Per minor league extra-inning rules, it was an unearned run against Speer. Right-hander Aaron Civale started for Akron and worked 4.2 innings and allowed four runs, three earned. He left trailing 4-0.
Duck Tales
Akron was shut out by Scott Copeland until two outs in the seventh inning when the righty was inexplicably lifted in favor of lefty Daniel Zamora. The Ducks proceeded to score five runs on back-to-back RBI doubles by Daniel Salters and Haggerty and a three-run homer by Ka'ai Tom. Tom's dropped fly ball in the eighth, however, set up an unearned run off Mitch Brown and the Ponies tied the game, 5-5.
