RubberDucks Conclude Road Trip with 3-2 Loss

(Manchester, N. Hamp.) August 17, 2014 - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats used a two-run single from Cory Aldridge and a bases-loaded walk to Mike McDade in the sixth inning of Sunday's game to rally from a two-run deficit and claim a 3-2 victory over the Akron RubberDucks at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

The loss stunned the RubberDucks and starter Joe Colon (8-7), who had cruised through the first five innings. The RubberDucks failed for the second straight day to overtake first-place in the EL West. The Richmond Flying Squirrels lost at Portland, 7-1, Sunday, but remain a half-game ahead of the RubberDucks (70-58). Akron currently holds a 6-game lead over third-place Bowie with 14 games left to play. The top two teams in the division earn post-season berths.

Colon, Akron's all-star righthander, remained winless since June 29th, a period of nine consecutive starts. After holding the Cats to no runs on two hits through the first five innings, Colon lost his command in the sixth, issuing four walks and hitting a batter. He loaded the bases with one out before surrendering a two-run single to Aldridge to tie the game, 2-2. Two batters later, with the bases still loaded and two outs, McDade drew a walk to force in the go-ahead run.

Colon was lifted in favor of righthander Louis Head, who induced a groundout to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.

The RubberDucks built a 2-0 lead against New Hampshire starter Austin Bibens-Dirkx (6-2) on a solo homer by Tim Fedroff in the third, and an RBI single by Jake Lowery in the fourth. Fedroff's shot to right was his first homer of the year.

Dirkx went the first six, did not walk a batter, and struck out five.

Cats closer Greg Infante pitched the final two innings for his 19th save. In the ninth, Akron threatened, getting the tying run to third, but Lowery grounded out to end the game.

Notes: The RubberDucks were 4-2 on the road trip. Head retired all four batters he faced. Anthony Gallas was 2-4, with a double and finished 9-24 on the road trip. Announced attendance was 5,528.

The RubberDucks are off Monday, but will return to action at Canal Park on Tuesday night at 7:05 when they welcome the Altoona Curve for the start of a three-game series. LHP Jhonathan Ramos (4-5, 3.99) is the scheduled starter for Altoona, while the RubberDucks are expected to give the ball to RHP Will Roberts (12-11, 3.97).
