Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Altoona, PA) May 4, 2014 - Akron RubberDucks first baseman Ronny Rodriguez smacked a two-out, opposite-field double in the eighth inning Sunday, driving in the eventual winning run in a 5-4 victory over the Altoona Curve at People's Natural Gas Field.
The win completed a four-game series sweep for the RubberDucks (18-11) and extended the team's winning streak to eight games. Akron is now 7-2 on the season against Altoona, with eight more games coming up against the Curve this month.
Rodriguez's double off Joan Montero (0-1) drove home Tony Wolters, who had singled earlier in the inning. It broke a 4-4 tie, and set the stage for Akron's 11th one-run victory of the season.
Righthander Shawn Armstrong worked the ninth inning, retiring the Curve (11-17) in order for his fourth save. It made a winner of Enosil Tejeda who tossed 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Akron starter Joe Colon didn't figure in the decision, but threw well, going five innings and allowing just one run.
The RubberDucks held a 4-1 lead until the seventh inning when Altoona's Drew Maggi belted a three-run homer off Francisco Valera to tie the game.
The RubberDucks got off to a fast start against righthander Nick Kingham. Jordan Smith smacked an RBI single in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. In the second, Joe Wendle delivered a two-run single and Wolters added a sacrifice fly as Akron built a 4-0 lead.
Richmond defeated Trenton, 5-3, on Sunday to remain 1 1/2 games behind the first-place RubberDucks.
The RubberDucks will open a three-game series at Erie on Monday night at 7:05. RHP Will Roberts (3-2, 4.03) will get the start for Akron, while RHP Warwick Saupold (2-2, 6.08) is the announced starter for the SeaWolves. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM in Akron and also via www.AkronRubberDucks.com.
