New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats by the score of 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

The victory results in New Britain's first series sweep of 2014 and their first three-game win streak.

CF Corey Wimberly led off the home half of the first with a triple off of New Hampshire starter RHP Deck McGuire, a sign of the offense to come in the four run inning. DH Nate Hanson drove him in two batters later and then scored himself on a double high off the wall in right center from LF Daniel Ortiz.

The scoring continued when 1B Kennys Vargas, who reached base on a single between first and second, scored on a fielder's choice grounder to third. Vargas raced home from third and scored after C Aaron Munoz mishandled the throw from 3B Andy Burns. A sacrifice fly to center by RF Mike Kvasnicka drove home Ortiz and put New Britain up 4-0 early on.

New Hampshire would get one back in the top of the fifth to make it a 4-1 game. RF Brad Glenn, who led off the inning with a double off of Rock Cats starter RHP Virgil Vasquez, came home on a fielder's choice to SS A.J. Pettersen.

Pettersen's bunt single in the bottom of the sixth provided an insurance run for New Britain. The shortstop dropped a bunt with Kvasnicka on third and the outfielder slid in headfirst to beat the throw and make it a 5-1 Rock Cats lead.

The Fisher Cats got to Vasquez for one more run before giving way to reliever RHP Adrian Salcedo. Vasquez pitched to contact and induced a lot of outs during the afternoon, working 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one. Vasquez picks up his first win of the season (1-0) while Salcedo picks up his second consecutive save.

McGuire's record drops to 3-3 in the loss. The righthander worked six innings, allowing five runs, all earned, on seven hits while walking one and striking out three.

The Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, come into New Britain beginning Monday for a three-game visit. The Rock Cats will send RHP Matt Summers to the hill to face Trenton starter RHP Caleb Cotham.
