New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Brad Glenn had a pair of hits and figured into two Fisher Cats rallies, but New Hampshire stranded the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth innings to fall at New Britain, 5-2. The loss completes the three-game sweep at the hands of the Rock Cats (10-17), and leaves New Hampshire with a four-game losing streak heading into a series with Binghamton on Monday night.
The Rock Cats built their lead quickly in the first inning against Fisher Cats starter Deck McGuire (L; 3-3). Lead-off man Corey Wimberly tripled off the right field wall, and then scored on a one-out single by Nate Hanson. Daniel Ortiz followed with a run-scoring double before a fielder's choice and a sac fly plated two more runs for a 4-0 Rock Cats lead.
The Fisher Cats had no immediate answer against New Britain starter Virgil Vasquez (W; 1-0). They had just two base runners before the scratched out a run in the fifth. Brad Glenn led off with a double, advanced to third on a fly out, and then scored on Jonathan Jones' RBI groundout to cut New Britain's lead to 4-1.
McGuire settled down after the shaky first inning, keeping the Rock Cats to 4 runs through five innings. He came back out for the sixth and allowed one more on a sacrifice bunt before calling it a day. Over six full frames, he gave up five runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out three.
New Hampshire did put together two rally attempts late in the game. In the eighth, Kevin Nolan delivered a bases loaded single to knock Vasquez out of the game. Adrian Salcedo came on with one out and struck out Michael Crouse and Mike McDade to end the threat.
In the ninth, Glenn led off with a single before Salcedo got the next two outs. The Fisher Cats would end up loading the bases again, but Andy Burns grounded out to third to end the game.
Glenn led another light-hitting day with two of the team's six hits. Jones and Nolan each added an RBI while Andy Fermin reached base twice with a walk and a single.
The bullpen was a bright spot in relief of McGuire, throwing two scoreless innings. Tony Davis pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to extend his scoreless streak to a team-high 10.1 innings. Richard Bleier, who took the loss on Saturday, also worked a perfect eighth to keep the Fisher Cats' comeback hopes alive.
After the weekend sweep in Connecticut, the Fisher Cats are back home on Monday for a three-game set against the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets). The series includes a night to recognize youngsters who complete the Northeast Delta Dental Oral Health Challenge on Monday, a Hood Kids Club night on Tuesday, and Manchester Schools Day at 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday. Tickets are available at the team box office, by calling (603) 641-2005, and by visiting www.nhfishercats.com.
The pitching match-up for Monday calls for right-hander Scott Copeland against Binghamton righty Tyler Pill. Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman will have the radio call beginning at 6:15 p.m. on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
