Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals, affiliates of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings and AHL's Manchester Monarchs, have agreed to terms on a contract with forward Judd Medak for the upcoming season. Medak is the twelfth signee by the Royals and seventh from last season's Northern Division Championship squad.

Medak, 24, averaged nearly a point per game in his second professional season. The Vancouver, British Columbia native was one of six Royals to post at least 20 goals (22) while chipping in 26 assists in 50 appearances during the 2003-04 regular season. Medak finished tied for fourth in scoring in the postseason with three goals and 10 points. He is one of just three Royals to tally a shorthanded goal in the postseason (4/17 @ PEO, 2-1OTW). The 6-foot, 200-pound power forward scored the first overtime game-winning marker in Royals post-season history in game two of the Northern Division Finals versus Peoria.

Coach of the Royals, Derek Clancey, said Medak's work ethic is essential to the Royals success, "Judd Medak is one of those rare players that continually lifts a team because of his relentless, intelligent play. He does more damage to the opponent without the puck although he does possess a good solid accurate shot ...He is always going 110%."

The 2003 ECHL All Star enjoyed multiple call-ups to the American Hockey League. Medak skated in a total of 14 AHL contests for the Manchester Monarchs, where he attended training camp, the Hershey Bears and Syracuse Crunch. He registered three assists and 24 penalty minutes in his American Hockey League stint.

Prior to signing with Reading last season, Medak began his professional career with the Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL. Appearing in 62 contests, Medak fired in 17 tallies and 43 points along with 104 penalty minutes in the regular season. He also suited up for four playoff contests and registered three assists. The University of Minnesota-Duluth grad enjoyed a successful four-year career with the Bulldogs from 1998-2002.

"Judd is a rare combination of talent, determination and character. He is the consummate professional who is integral to the success of this team. We look forward to having him back in purple & black," commented Reading general manager, Ray Delia.

To date, the Royals have twelve players under contract for the 2004-05 season. Rookie signees are defensemen Simon Mangos, Frederic Belanger, Andrew Nahirniak, Matthew Medley and left wing Colt King. Royals returnees from last season's Northern Division Championship squad include: Defensemen Ian Turner, Dean Arsene and Reagan Rome along with forwards Peter Hay, David Masse, Judd Medak and leading scorer Graig Mischler.

The Reading Royals are entering their fourth season in Reading, Pennsylvania after relocating from Columbus, Ohio. The Royals enjoyed their first Kelly Cup playoff appearance last season, claiming the Northern Division Title and were one win away from qualifying for the Kelly Cup Finals.

The Royals and the City of Reading are proud to be hosting the 13th annual ECHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition presented by Coors Light on January 25 and 26.
