Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
GAME NOTES JULY 3, 2005, 6:05 p.m.: OMAHA ROYALS (38-45) vs. Albuquerque Isotopes (46-37) HOME: 13-22 (39-33 in â04) AWAY: 25-23 (32-40 in '04) vs. Albuquerque: 3-12 (8-8 in '04)
TONIGHT: The Royals face Albuquerque in the final game of the home stand at Rosenblatt Stadium, where Omaha has lost six straight home games. Air-time is 5:45 on Magic 1490 and at www.Oroyals.com. The game will be followed by the 21st annual Omaha World-Herald Fireworks show, co-sponsored by the City of Omaha and the Omaha Royals.
LAST NIGHT: Aaron Guiel's home run leading off the bottom of the 9th spoiled Ariel Prieto's bid for a complete game shutout, but Albuquerque hung on for a 2-1 victory. Randy Messenger delivered his second save in as many nights and his sixth of the season by retiring all three batters he faced, following Guiel's home run. The game ended when Calvin Pickering tagged a 3-1 pitch back to the warning track in center field for the final out. Chris Aguila hit a two-run homer off Chris George (6-5) in the 5th inning. George struck out a career-best eleven batters in his 6.0 inning stint.
ROYALS REPORT: The eleven strikeouts recorded by George last night was the highest whiff total for an Omaha pitcher since Chad Durbin fanned eleven New Orleans Zephyrs on April 26, 2001, leading Omaha to a 3-2 win at Rosenblatt. Last night also marked George's fourth consecutive quality start. Over his past six games, including two relief outings, he's 3-2 with a 2.52 ERA. However, George is 0-5 at home, while going 6-0 on the road. *** Paul Phillips went 0-for-4 last night, halting his hitting streak at six games. Phillips has hit in 15 of his last 17 contests, at a .379 (25-66) clip. *** *** Guiel has smacked five home runs in his last nine games, hitting .314 (11-35) and knocking in nine runs in the process. *** PCL All-Star Adrian Brown is hitting .200 (9-45) over his last dozen games. *** Alejandro Prieto has gone hitless in six at-bats over the past two games, following a seven-game hit string when he hit .370 (10-27). *** Chris Truby has a .214 average (9-42) over his last 12 tilts. *** As a team, the Royals are hitting .196 during their five-game losing streak and have been outscored 17-6. Omaha is also on a season-long six-game home losing streak and has dropped its last seven meetings with Albuquerque.
STARTERS: RH Travis Smith (2-2, 7.50) vs. RH Denny Bautista (0-1, 4.91) Bautista makes his 3rd rehab assignment start. The 24-year old right-hander went on the DL May 15 with a shoulder injury. His last start was a 2-1 loss at Iowa last Tuesday (2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K). In seven starts with KC this season, Bautista was 2-2 with a 5.80 ERA (35.2 IP, 36 H, 23 ER, 17 BB, 23 K, 2 HR). In 2004, Bautista opened the season with Baltimore's Double-A affiliate, Bowie, before being called up to the Orioles on May 25. He appeared in two relief outings with the Orioles before being sent back to Bowie. Bautista came to KC on June 21, in a trade for Jason Grimsley. He was assigned to Wichita and went 4-3 with a 2.53 ERA in 12 starts for the Wranglers. Bautista was recalled by KC on September 6 and went 0-4 with a 6.51 ERA in 5 big league starts. He was ranked by Baseball America as KC's #2 prospect entering this season.
